I 25 A MESSACE FROM CENERAL CRANT "Tell the young; men that General Grant does not drink a drop of liqnor has not lor eighteen years because he is afraid to drink it. I tried to drink with extreme moderation, because I knew tbat alcohol is Ihe worst poisoa a man could tak, into bis system, bnt I found it was an absolute impossibility to drink moderately. Because moderate drinking is a practical impossibility, I became an absolute teetotaler a crank if you please. I do not nee it even io. my house. Drink is the greatest curse, because practically all crime and all disaster are the result of it. Ninety five per cent, of desertions and acta of lawlessness in the army are due to drink. If I could, by offering my body as a sac rifice, free this country from the frill . cancer, the demon drink, I'd thank the Almighty for the privilege of doineit. If I bad the greatest appointive powers in the country, no man would Bet evea the smallest appointment from me un less be showed proof of his absolute tse totalism. As it is, of my own appointees, the members of my staff, not one of them touches a drop." Frederick D. Grant. - Choosing A Christmas Present.
