A MESSACE FROM CENERAL CRANT
"Tell the young; men that General
Grant does not drink a drop of liqnor
has not lor eighteen years because he
is afraid to drink it. I tried to drink
with extreme moderation, because I
knew tbat alcohol is Ihe worst poisoa
a man could tak, into bis system, bnt I
found it was an absolute impossibility
to drink moderately. Because moderate
drinking is a practical impossibility, I
became an absolute teetotaler a crank
if you please. I do not nee it even io.
my house. Drink is the greatest curse,
because practically all crime and all
disaster are the result of it. Ninety
five per cent, of desertions and acta of
lawlessness in the army are due to drink.
If I could, by offering my body as a sac
rifice, free this country from the frill .
cancer, the demon drink, I'd thank the
Almighty for the privilege of doineit.
If I bad the greatest appointive powers
in the country, no man would Bet evea
the smallest appointment from me un
less be showed proof of his absolute tse
totalism. As it is, of my own appointees,
the members of my staff, not one of
them touches a drop." Frederick D.
Grant. -
Choosing A Christmas Present.
When you make a present of a period
ical to a friend or a family you are
really selecting s companion to influence
them for good or ill during a whole year.
If the acquaintances of your sons and
daughters were to talk to them aloud as
some periodicals talk to them silently,
how quickly yon would forbid the com
panionship! Intheoue case as in the
other, the best course is to supplant the
injurious with something equally at
tractive and at the same time "worth
white." A food can be wholesome and
utterly distasteful. Readitig can be
made 80, too. But The Youth's Com
panion not only nourishes the mind,
but delights it, just like tbat ideal hu
man associate whom you would choose.
The Youth's Companion Gil! that place '
now in more than ball a million homes.
Can yon not think of another family iu
which it is not now known where it
would be joyfully welcomed? ' ' . -
