Coroner Kaiuier flMETO MAKE GOOD It is several weeks siuce the Portland Evening Telegram made the assfrtii-n that a corrupt combination existed be tween the editor of the Mist and otfi cials of Coluuibu C unty. and that i( they had t! eir just deserts they would not now be living in St. Helen ihicli can only be taken to mean that the proper place for said orHcials and tiie editor is the penitentiary!. Theu came the statement of the Telegram that 'There is a duty which the pres of Portland owes the public, and that is to expose the condition of affairs in Col umbia County." Tiie Telegram is read in every city in the State, and this statement will, of course, have weight. Peopl-s are justi fied i'i believing it, and therefore, if it is untrue, the good name of the county has been smirched and its officials have been unjustly stigmatized as criminals third lime. No bids so far has lieen ant isfactory. As the route and time table is planned our people io not want the mail to come iu that wav, because ft would not get into this eflice until t m. or Inter, Mate Lecturer J. J. Johiiwm visited Vernonia Urnnge No. SOS, last Saturday ntgut. His address to tut public was a very good one, from the grange point of view. Some of the members of this charge gave Rev . and Mrs. Maurer, our new pastor and wife, a house warming Thurs day last. The people here are goiug to like Mr. and Mm. Maurer, and they are going to like the people. O, t Spencer and family, of Portland, who have been resting and visiting with the home folks the past two weeks, re turned Monday last ready, Omar says, for another year' work. Mr. and Mrs. John lleilstein will live at "The Reserve" as soou as Pr. and Mra. Hatfield vacates. This will make them a nice home. Dr. and Mrs. Hatfield go to Scappooae next week. Miss Grace Early, who has been visit ing with her sister, Mrs. Albert Baker, at Dundee, the past two months, returned last week. Mrs. Franklin Malolie, of Louisville, Colorado, is visiting her mother, Mrs. I.. S. Redmond and brother Hurley. It has been seventeen veins since the brother and sister saw each other. When Mis. Malone returns Mrs. Redmond will go with her to LcMars, Colorado, where she will speud the winter with her sou, Eu- geue and family. She will also visit sister while in the centennial state. The surprise to Dr. Hatfield on Tues day, the 17th, on the tvtth anniversary of his birth, aud farewell dinuer at the camp ground to himself and Mrs. Hat field, wui well attended . As we was the "It'' on that occasion we cannot say all that we should like to sav, but will say that the dinner was fine; a typical Ne halem spread. It was very pleasant to us to be so kindly reuiemliered, and we are especially grateful to the ui.iuy friends iu the Nchaleni Valley for their expressions of svuipalhv and good will ' at our goiug.
