As Slee:b, at the M. E. Church In this city on Sunday evening last, delivered a very strong sermon on what he claims to be th. existing state of affairs in thisc immunity. He denounced in very strong terms the skating rink, cliaracteriiing it as the sate to hell. The Mist believes this was uncalled lor. Holler skating is a healthful.legiliuiate amusement, and Mr. Cade is nuking an honest living for himself and family. He closes his place promptly at 10 O'clock each evening, and that is certainly a reasonable hour, and, far as we cau leara, nothing is ever ?een there wiise lhan cau be seen at any h e pond in the wintertime. With the denunciation of men who tempt young girls we are in hearty sympathy, and for their benefit we publish, at Mr. Slceth'a request, the following extract from the laws of the State of Oregon chapter 91, section 7: If any person over the a;? ot sixteen years shall solicit, entice, procure or attempt to procure any child under the age of eighteen years to carnally know oi have sexual intercourse witli any person such person nlinfi be deemed guilty of feloDy; and upon conviction thereof hall be punished by imprisonment in the penitentiary for not less than one aud not more than twvnty years. But how about the girls and their parents T A "child" of seventeen should have some sense. She has probably been told frequently of the danger of her course and warned of its inevitable result. There are heedless parents, who seem to care nothing about who their girls keep company with or where they are at night; but there are also those who do their full duly only to find that their work has been in vain. Mr. SJeeth says "the gates of hell ate plainly marked, but it seems to be the fact thai if they were all nailed up some of these children of seventeen would climb over the fence ia otder lo get to the fie. It is a problem as oM as the woild, and its only solution is the slow one of education. There is a period in the live of bAh boya a:id iirl-i then they are in constant danger, an 1 it taxes the ut most wisdom jf the parents to sve thetn or reclaim them. Probably the best suggestion that can be made is that parents thoold get close to their children. Their faults are very often the res-il t of heredity, and, looking back over your own lives, you can probably see the time wheu a similar danger threatened you. The love of pleasure is universal, an within reasonable bounds it must be permitted. You can not makea good girl nr boy by suppression of all natural instincts, but you can do something to guide those instincts along safe channels, and above all things, never close the dor of your heart to any child. After they have tasted the dead sea fruits of illicit pleasure those who are not natural perverts after yearn for the life of dec ency. Let the door be al ways open . would be such an allar ound sweepstakes relrainingeut as to raise all this stink about nothing. At leat, we im certain i.o one but John F. Carroll, editor id the Tel. gram, would be guilty of such despicablo con- iluct. TO HONt) WORK tll'AH ANTKKlt. CWUTKWS t'RKATMKST. Sanitary Barber Shop The citizens of St. Helens, by an over whelming majority, have decided to is sue bonds in the sunt of flu.OOO, or so much thereof as may lie necessary for the purpose of providing alt adequate water sinudv. and they have selected as the first water commission, Messrs. Mo Cormick, Masten, Cbai. Mucklo, Edwlu UotsamlA T. Laws. These are all business men and taxpayers, and it is safe to say tliete will be no graft or wastefulness permitted. The pople have spoken, and they will hava yery little patience with anyone who attempts to embarrass the water board iu the dis charge of its duties by attempting to place legal obstacles iu the way of a bond issue. The initiative law is btoad and liberal and the tendency of the courts ha been to set aside any irregularities iu the manner of calling or holding an election and to a?cwtiu if the. result expresses the free will of the electors If it does, bonds issued will be upheld by the courts. We trus'. th board will act promptly and proceed as rapidly as is consistent with securing the test results. It is not bound to issue lone dollar's worth of bonds, or to spend a cent more than is necessary to demonstrate the possibility of securing a good water supply, either Irotu new Sjuiccs or by improving the present system. It can adopt a gravity system or a pumping system. It is- all uu to the board to disharge to the best of its ability the duties the people have entrusted it with. A. A. DAIil.lUN, Prop, Ktrat Door South of Mailt tT. HKI.KNS Dkntist Dr. Kambo will be in St. Helens, at the St. Helens Hotel Friday and Saturday of each week, prepared to do all kinds of dental work. KOTICK OF SALE. JOHN BACKUS AGAIN '09 R.iiNikK, Okk. , Aug. 2 To Tug Editor or Tit Misr: Mr. James F. Timouey has sold Ins place including live stock and farming utensils for fJdOO, and a previous sale of the river front for $301)0 makes a total of (14.500 for property assessed at fcJtiot) iu 1908, excluding live stock and farm ing tools, and at the same time adjoin ing property, partly timber, that can ba bought for 000 is assessed at (4525. The alteutio-j of the Board of t'qualiia'.ion was calied t ) the case and several oth ir projerttes that were worth at least twice the assessed valuation, but no correc tion was made. The motive for this heavy taxation of timber lands comjated to other proper tythree to one Is not far to seek.Tim ber lands are largely owned by non-residents who have no vote either for or af.iiust these dishonest otlicial. If a man is honest enough t retort money aid notes thev are assessed at full valne, and in my cise over 20 per cent premium, though the premium is knocked offin the so-called equalisation with the apparent object of showh g con cession, when in tact no concession is made, putting up a man of at taw to kn"ck him down ng.iiu; and to fiirtlirr show the dishonest methods cf the tax officials of Columbia County, I can point to a property iu Kainicr asesed iu VXYI at fW, and at the same time an un il'vitl.1 onp-hhfli interest in the &ame property was sold forIOU. It is not sufficient to say the officers of a county are corrupt. The particular officers must be pointcl out, and the offense with which they are charged. The Evening Telegram, in a very cowardly manner, ha charged that "In all the State th?re is not a queerer combination than that which exiuts and has long existed between j some of the county ofCcittts and this j fellow Flag;?. If Kla- and some ! of his confederates had their just dc-jcrls they would not now he livitig in St Helens."
