Rainier COl'STV FAIK. Tbe success of the Fourth of July Cele bration and the apparent desirableness of the location as a place for large meet ing, has caused a number of people to ask the editor of the Mist to advocate holding a county fair in the latter part of October at what is known as Oasis Park, the site of the recent celebration. The Yankton fair was the pioneer and the magnificent showing made tiieie by only a small section of Columbia County is a guarantee that a caunty fair wiuld bring out an exhibition of products tliat would ba a revelation to tho-e unac quainted with the county. Pomona Grange, at its Beaver Valley meeting. on the first Saturday in VERNONIA We have to add the names of John Cheldelin and Cleve Mellinger to ti e list of Fourth of July home comers. We are alwavs glad to have the boys spend their vacation here. Ke. K . Manrer, the newly appointed pastor here, it now down with the small pox himself, and his children are threat ened with it, to that it may be some time yet before he comet to this field of labor. F. K. Maimtten't baby boy hat been quite sick the past week, ami Franklin has been grumbling with a pet tooth. K. Se?senian and wife, T. R. Throop, Margaret Spencer and tiladys and Anna Nickerson spent the 4th at Forest Oiove. Thev took in theU. A. K. encampment and'visited friends and relatives. V. C. Mctlraw and wife, (nee Idllie MclKinnId) have purchased the Young ranch on Heaver Creek and will toon be gin housekeeping there. We are glad to have thetn settle down in the valley. Newt. Parker and ton Walter, aud Robert Spencer, made the metropolis a visit last week, returning on Friday. The Fourth waa celebrated here on Saturday last. There was a good parade at 10 a. in, including floats, representing Uncle Sam taking his hoys on an excursion to view the country, followed by Aunt Columbia to see that thev got into no mischief; one with tbe Goddess of l.ilerty, accompanied by her maids in waiting, all in white, and guarded by several "Merry Widows" of the male persuasion, and followed by several wagons and carriage beautifulty decorated with Xehalem's natural pro ducts, tir and cedar boughs, flags, flow ers, etc. The parade wat a decided suc cess. A short program waa given at the camp ground, a picnic dinner en joyed, after which a game of baseball w as enitnged in at the ball patk, between the bachelors and the benedicts, the former carrying on l he honors by a scoie of :l to lti. Some of our people went to Mist on Monday to further celebrate. Additional Local Mr. John M. Sweeney, whose home is in Detroit, Michigan, but who is inter ested in fruit lands in Rogue River Val ley, has been spending a few days look ing over Columbia County's possibilities us a fruit-raising country and is Aery THE (ELEKRATIOX. The people of St. Helens and Houltou have every reaton to congratulate them selves upon the success of their first joint celebration of the Nations birthday. It waaasitccees in every particular. Jut how many people participated it ia haul to say, but 2,000 is certainly a very con servative estimate, and we are willing to wager, as a basis for comparison, that more railroad tickets to St. Helens were sold on Monday last than were ever sold to any oue point in the county on any other day, and as St. Helena ami Houltou united are larger thait Clalskauie and about the same population as Rainier, we therefore claim there were more people present by a large uiajolity thau ever attended a celebration in Columbia County. They were good people and they hod a good time and were hearty in their praise of theeutcrtaimuent that had been provided them and are certain lo come again next Fourth. They enjoyed them selves, according to their varied tastes from the s-lcs of their feet to the crowns of their heads. For the intellect there was the musical and literaty programme including the earnest iuvocatloa by Rtv, uoon was th oration by Howard M. Urowncll ot Astoria, Mr. ltrowncll bad an attentive and appreciative audience and he handled his subject with the skill ol master. Ilia ora'.ion was short but during its delivery there was no manifestation ot unciiu- and Hie charm of Ui word painting appealed to all hit audience. There wa a little too much "twisting the tail ol the British lion," but that is expected on the Fourth and appears to Rive general satisfaction. It amuses us and don't hurt the lion, as he has become used to it. As a matter ot fact we have never had a fight lo a lliuish with Great ltrittaln and it It sincerely to be hoped, for the take ol oltilliatloii, we never will have. Mr.llrowueH't appeal to the boyt and girls to do credit to them selves in the battle ol hfe wat especially good. Theu came the dinner, including the free barbecue, aud a tier the noon hour the general programme ot sports, aud in the evening the display ot fire works.
