It providca, among other things, that in order to secure a license the per son so desiring must first secure the sig natures of a majority of the legal voters of the city, and a remonstrance contain ing a greater number of names would be proof that this had not been doue aud prevent the issuing of a license, litis Is the system now In vogue in the country precincts of Columbia County and brings the matter directly before the people, to say whether they want saloon and bow many of them. Mcltriile has beeti appoint ed by Uovernor Benson to a seat upon the Supreme lic.ich of the State, and Hun. James Campbell, of Oregon City, will succeed him ns Judge of the Fifth Judicial District and w ill hold court here next month. The elevation of Judge Mclirttle will give great satisfaction to hi hosts of friends in this county. No public official had a firmer hold upon tlie good will of his constituents and his re election for inauv successive terms as District Attorney and Judge came to be a mere matter of routine. The people were satisfied with his work and desired no change. His decisions were very sel dom reversed by the superior court, as he never attempted to save time at the expense of thoroughness nor to gain the esteem of the ignorant by hectoring the members of the bar. St. Helens has the distinction ol bar ing the only geuttine "Teddy Bear." He was named so when too young to intelli gently growl at his cognomen. In his uative language it is Theodore Ilaehr, but iu English or I'niled States it is Teddy Bear, and he is a very good natured mcmhor of the Block Cutters Union. Shoks If there is anything left out of my splendid new line it is something tlint ought not to be there. My variety gives everybody a choice. Style and quality at Wellington's. Wherever the boys go their neat appearance will reflect credit upon their home town, and we have faith to believe they will make it interesting for their competitors. All the fish are supposed to be caught in the Willamette slough, but it is very hard to defiue just whrre river and plough join, nd it is said I be fishermen nse all kinds of persuasion to induce the salmon to come into the "opan" territory, even go ing so far as to employ expert divers to herd them in. The fish law seems to be full of holes as a fine-meshed net, and it will always be until the Royal Chi nook is a thing of the past. Do you know that St. Helens people are entitled to the best they can get and that they get it at Gray's. r-herifl White started Thursday last for Concordia, Kansas, to lie present at the bedside of his mother, who is quite seri ously sick.
