System TT 1 ! Panic Block Exlla and Third of Au dience Dlea Performance In Honor of Governor. Mexico City, Feb. 16. Between 250 and 800 people were burned to death and many othera injured in a fire which destroyed the Plorea theater in the city of Acapulco last night. The newa of the dlaaater reached hero thia after noon, telegraphic communication with Acapulco having been deiiroyed laat night and today, owing to the fact that the telegraph office adjoining the theater waa destroyed and all wires put out of commission. The Florea theater waa a wooden structure and last night more than 1, 000 people crowded into it to witness a special performance given in honor of Governor Damian Klores, of the slate of Guerrero, One of the num bers on the program consisted of a series of moving pictures. While th operator waa exhibiting these, a film caught fire and the blaze waa quickly communicated to some bunting which had been used for decorative purposes, In an incredibly short time the flames spread to all parts of the structure. There were but three narrow exits and the panic stricken audience rushed to them, many persons falling to be crushed to death, their bodies choking the way to eacape for others. The screams of those imprisoned were ter rifying. Owing to the rapidity with which the fire spread and its intense heat it waa impossible to attempt rescue work, and those imprisoned were literally roasted alive, as the fire burned with little smoke and few were suffocated. If M if? Missouri Courta Doubt Waters-Pierce Company Quitting Standard. Jefferson City. Mo., Feb. 16. Hen ry S. Triest, of St- Louis, and H. Clay Pierce, chairman of the board of the Waters-Pierce Oil company, today filed in the Supreme court of Missouri an acceptance of the terms imposed upon the company by the recent ouster order of the court. The fine of $50,000 was paid. The ouster decree provided that the company must show to the court that it had severed all connection with the Standard Oil company, and a state ment to thia effect may yet be required by the court. Judge Priest, however, said that he believed today's action covered the case so far as the M ia- souri corporation was concerned, and said be did not know of anything more that could be done. German Immigration Increasing. St Paul, Minn. Feb. 16. According to word received here, 46 families are scheduled to sail from Germany today to take up farma in I mo county, Mm nesota. Their coming marks the be ginning of a new immigration move ment of German farmers into thia state and results from the efforts of the Min nesota immigration bureau. The pros pective settlers come from Galicia. where they have lived on small farms and have saved small sums, but have not enjoyed the political and religious freedom they desire. War In Balkans Due Tri April. Berlin, Feb. 16. A declaration of war by Austria upon Servia early in April is predicted by the Daily Tage blatt today. The Tageblatt declares it possesses official information that un less Servia ceases a campaign of insult and provocation Austria will take ac tion. It is rumored Austria sought hiat Saturday to obtain the consent of the European powers to a temporary occupation of Servia. It ia believed Austria a failure to obtain consent re sulted from the opposition of Russia to the scheme. Fear Trip May Ruin Bell.' Philadelphia, Feb. 16. The discov ery today that the crack in the Liberty bell haa extended 17 inches beyond ita original length caused the starting of another move to prevent the proposed trip of the old relic to the Pacific coast. The second crack extends al most to the top of the bell, and any sudden jolt may cause it to aplit in half. The committee of the council liaving the proposed trip of the bell in charge will make a report Thursday. Teton Tunnel Is on Fira. Great Falls, Mont, Feb. 16. Washington, Feb. 15. J. Newell, of the reclamation service, stated to day that orders had been issued to shut down work on the Klamath irrigation project, pending adjustment of differ ncea between tha government and the aettlera. Thia announcement follow etuers must imy iiib annual mainte nance charge of 75 cents per acre, be ginning May 1 next, and must mak ten equal annual paymenta of $3 each per acre for the water right, the first water payment falling due May 1910. Many aettlera have announced that they cannot pay $30 per acre for water, but, aa thia ia tha actual proportionate cost of building the project the secre tary cannot accept less. He requested tha Water Users' association to inform him what it ia willing to do under the circumstances, but aa it haa not made reply, he felt obliged to atop further construction until satisfactory agree ment ia reached. The aettlera, under the first unit of tha project, which ia completed, wili be furnished water thia eoming season, if they pay the maintenance charge, but unleaa there la a speedy agreement construction of the Clear lake reservoir will not be carried forward and the aecond unit of tha project will remain undeveloped Meantime, Engineer Murphy, charge of tha Klamath project haa been called to Washington and will be aucceeded by W. W. Slf-cht F. W. Hanna, another reclamation engineer, has been sent to resume the preliminary work of the Malheur pro ject and, if the Klamath controversy ia not adjusted, work may be concen trated at Malheur. in ROBBERS SECURE S36.O00. Oaring Early Morning Holdup Carried Out Near Denver. Denver, Feb. 15. That the hold-up of the westbound Denver & Rio Grande passenger train, near Denver, at 3:15 this morning, waa the work of three instead of two robbers and that the robbery of the mail car gave them a loot of possibly $35,000, are indicated by the investigation of the railroad and police officials today. So far no tangi. ble clew to the identity or whereabouts of the robbers haa been found, but it seems probable that the men came to Denver and are now hiding in thia city. The exact amount aecured by the robbers cannot be ascertained. It is known, however, that the registered mail sack from Colorado Springs to le nver waa empty and that little of value waa in the Pueblo-Denver sack. The sack from Portland, Colo., to Den ver, however, contained $400 of money order funda consigned to the Denver postoffice. The robbery waa remarkable for its originality and daring. It took place within eight miles of Dener, within less than two miles of Fort Logan, the United States military reservation. and at a spot where habitations are plentiful. Yet so thorough waa the work of the robbers and so well were their plana laid that they had fully an hour and a half start of the officers. Search of the vicinity of the bold-up indicates that a third man and poesibly a fourth were engaged in the robbery ; that a rubber-tired buggy waa in wait ing for the actual hold-upa and that torpedoes and red signal fires were used unsuccessfully in an attempt to atop the train before the automatic revolvers of the two men on the train were used in doing thia. ALL FAVOR LOCKS. Government Engineers Unanimous for Present Canal Plan. Washington, Feb. 15. Colonel George W. Goethals, chairman of the Isthmian Canal commission, and the membera of the board of engineer ap pointed by President Roosevelt, who went to Panama with President-elect Taft reached Washington today. The board will report unanimously in favor of continuing the lock plan. Colonel Goethals said : "I repeat what I said to you a year ago, and that ia that the canal will be completed and ships will be traversing it by February 1, 1915. Work on the waterway is going ahead splendidly. I am to appear before the house commit tee on apropriationa Monday, when I will be prepared to give an estimate of what the canal will coat. "In my judgment, the character of the canal to be built has not changed in the least. The most acceptable plan ia that of the lock canal, which is that now under construction. Any danger of ships bumping into the gates or other parts of the locks, about which some apprehension haa been expressed, will be entirely averted by electrical devices by which the vessels will be kept under control at all times." Blizzard Raging Again. Denver, Feb. 15. The worst blia- zard of the winter ia raging in the mountaina iof Colorado tonight and as a result railway line that have been tied up nearly a week, and which the officiate believe were about to be open ed, will probably continue blockaded for several days more. The Denver & Rio Grande has called In its snow plows from Marshall and Poncha passes on its narrow gauge line, but has thua far managed to keep open the traffic of the Tennessee pass on the main line be- teewn Denver and Salt Lake.
