THE HOLIDAYS DKfUbes-13. CERTITUDE The editor of the Oregonisu has dis tinctly outlined the policy of that paper in the coming State and President!! campaigns. It will sopport President Rooesvelt, if he U a nominee, but fur ther than that it will do Just as it sees flt Th rank and file of the party will be K ratified to know that much is cer tain and whoever has charge of the campaign will do well to rely entirely upon the merits of the candidates and the making of their good qualities known to the average voter. So far as ths matured crop of Oregon polititicians is concerned, the Oregonian doubtless finds it baid to accord any vt them very great or sincere praise, uen erally it ba been allied with the Simon faction, yet it baa occasionally turned its batteries upon them, and It is no secret that Mr. Scott beleived the Simon followers deliberately belayed Senator Corbett in the interest of Bimon's elec tion to the United 8ttes Senate. There are, in fact, very few Republicans of any prominence in Oregon -whom the Oregonian has not stigmatized in a man ner to reflect upon its sincerity should it now support them for public office the two notable exceptions, strangely enough, being Messrs. Furnish and Lowell, The Oregonian Is tbe greatest paper on the Pacific coast, and, in sopport of a sound principle, It has demoostrsted Its Immeoas influence. It advocated the single gold standard In opposition to all the time serving politicians of both psrties, and it has a right to glory in Its victory. It has been tbe most potent factor In building up (he State by mak ing its resources widely known. The people owe a debt of gratitude to the great paper and they pay it cheerfully. It court has brought it well deserved wraith and stability. If it desires to tnksji year off in politics or to maka Tomorrow marks the end of the boll day season created by proclamation of Governor Chamberlain at the request of the bankers of tbe city of Portland The Governor has been severely criticie ed for his course and held lenponsiM for all its bad effects, yet it seems to us thst heehoee the lesser of two evils snd would have been more severely censure; had he refused to grant the holidays an bis refusal had been followed by a de termined ron opon the banks, bringing Widespread disaster to all the interest of the State. Time has been given the people for thought and to acquire infor mation ss to the cause and nature of the financial stringency, and, despite the efforts of a few who would profit by a prolongation of the present stati of sffaiis, tbe pepie generally hare be come convinced that there is no reason whatever to anticipate any such pro longed depression a would e uui were the country in a yate of actual industrial collapse. , ' Tbe csuses of the panic are under stood. The primary cans is dishonest v manifested in get-rich-quick scheme of greater or lesjer magnitude from the Alton railroad deal to the nianv-c,jr- porationed scheme of the Title Guarsnty bank In I he city of Portland. President Roosevelt precipitated the crisis by his expmire of the big fish in the Wall street pond. This affected billions of dollars worth of stocks arid bonds, snd the foreign holders of these securi ties, realizing the ioevitable, sold cut at whatever price they could secure, snd tbepjvment of these bslsnces drained tbe hew York bsnks of their reserves, sod In turn the New York banks refus ed to psy the sums due their Oregon correspondents. Thebsnksof Portland, knowing tint the handling of our im mense crops would necssitate the with drasal of more cash than they could supply if at the same time they wtre compelled to meet an unueual demand fiom their depositors, called opon the Governor to proclaim the holidays, and we believe the result demonstrates thst he best thing has been dons for 11 concerned. Money 1 flowing to the Unit- d States in vat sum, Railroad end other stocks have fallen o that Europeans are investing, snd the wheat crop of the Inland Empire will put thirty millions of dollars in circulation in the next ninety days. All thst I needed is for people to go fore these never-to-be-regretted holidays were created. THE REVIEW AND RAINIER. Ths Mist is glad to learn tbst it hss been decided to continue the publication of thi) Rainier Review without Inter mission. Rainier is entitled to a good local paper, and one can be made to pay a reasooab'e return to a resident editor and manager. The only reason the editor of the Mist retired from the fi-ld was besause be fouud it impossible to do justice to both papers, and for that reason unprofitable. Rainier is having its dullest period at Ui3 present tune. Tbe prosperity of the town depends entirely upon lumber and kindred products, and, owing to many causes chief of which is the rste bill- that industry is partially paralyzed. But this will not Ust. In doe time ths mills and camps will resume operations, and tbe big psy roils will bring ready cash to those in business in the town, snd new Industries will increase the community' business and prosperity until it realizes the fondest hopes of tbe most enthusiastic citizens. - No community in the entire North west is better located for a manufactur ing city than is Kainier. With a water front of two miles, psratelled by a rail road, on the banks of the greatest natu ral waterway of the continent, Its future growth is assured. It depends, however, upon its present residents whether that growth ehill slowly conform to th growth of the entire Country, or whether It shall be facilitated by methods that have proved successful elsewhere chief of which is the creation of a ooblic spirit thst will stop at no reasonsble ex pense to beautify tbe town, improve its sanitary conditions, connect it by a good road with the fertile Nenalem Valley. n 1 maker its advantages and the re route of the entire county koown to all who have their thoughts turned westward. The great factors in sccom- plishti g this work should be tbe local paper and Jlie Commercial Club. The latter organization bas started upon tbe second year of its career, under tbe moat favorable auspices, and with assurance of a largely increased membership. We ope it will not lose sight of the aula object of its existence, which is, first, last, and all the time to work for the growth and prosperity of tbe City, VITAL STATISTICS OCTOBER. Clats p coun ty had 29 births, with no marriages, a record almost unique. In Gilliam, Sherman and Wheeler eoenties nothing happened. No one we bora, died, sick or msrrled for one whole month. Tbe same JMng Is the ease with Curry County, except one death, snd with Lake, exceol 4 births. Curing the month there were through out tbe state only 80 death from tuber culosis, a remarkable record; and only nine new cases were reported. Out of 114 cases of typhoid fever only nine died while out of 100 eases of diptheri only one resulted fatally. There were 110 esses of measles and only two deaths. Ont of 85 caeca of smallpox none died, wnere a nan a ecntury ago Hie deaths from this disease were almost 100 per cent Counting totals, there were 509 birth. 307 deaths (gain by births 172) and 407 OUR PORTLAND LETTER.
