I nltus is an Indian word and it applies where no other word seems to fit the case. In this instance it weans people without intel ligence or morality. They may not lie criminals but tliev care nothing for the virtues or decencies that go to mate up good, self-respecting men and women It is almost certain that in due time they will figure in the criminal courts or become county charges very often both. Columbia County may not have more than its share of such people, but the court records give plenty of evidence that they constitute one of our .financial burdens, to say nothing of the moral pestilence tbey spread wherever they reside. They breed like maggots and their progeny inherits all their evil traits. Unfortunately, in our present im - perfect state of civilation, there seems to be bat little remedy for this evil. The Swartbout killing and subsequent trial have emphasized 'these facts. The family came to this county some three years ago, and Gardiner lived with them under circumstances that w. to say the least, suspicious and bound to pro Yoke unfavorable comment. The father who appears to have been a man of no consequence, visited his wife occasion ally and endeavored to persuade her to return to him, offering as an induce ment, to procure her a good place as cook in a logging camp. The woman declined this generous offer, preferring to stay with the man who, she said "was kind to herself and her children" Gar diner, also a man ot low intelligence, seemed to think this gave him a propri etary right to the woman, and when the husband threatened to kill him, Uie tragedy resulted. They were not the worst class of people. They were mere ly low grade or cultus, and the county has suffered by their presence, and prob ably the end is not yet. This family re ceived, out of the expenses of the trial of the man who killed their father, nearly one hundred dollars in witness fee?, and at the same term of court a doctor's bill was allowed for attendance upon the woman who was the cause of the trag edy. With nearly a hundred dollars of the county's money coming to them it looked as if they might affjrd io pay the mother's doctor bill. Columbia County has been J cursed with a number of such families. There are probably one of them in each of the principal communities, and they are and always will be a danger and a source of expense. It seems impossible to get rid of them, and the v inertness of the general public and an indisposition to complain of what are considered fam ily matters permit them to remain un molested until the commission of the inevitable crime. Then the law is in voked and the courts intervene fur the protection of society. , As an instance ot the good that can 1m accomidislud in a remote community by an intellint organisation we have taken pleasure In referring to the work of Natal Urnnire. The report of that or- ganimion, made to the recent Pomona, shows that this grange hs ft member ship of 63 with an average attendance of M which all members of fraternal organisations well understand is 'an un- usually lanre rorccntaao. The grange owr.s its own hall, very commodious, handsome building, with ample iriounus, well fenced and a row or mountain au in front. It also has stables for the teams of those who attend from a dis tance. As thev are liberal entertainers they have found it necessary to pur chase a range and dishes, at quite a lai'ge expense. We believe there is no residence within a mile of the hall, yet it is the amusement and literary Uenter for a wide scope of country. It is freely offered for all public meetings, and it is here the young meet to eniov the pleasures of the dance. It is an ameliorating fac tor in au isolated country, ana it is no wonder the community feels proud or It. Natal Grange is comprised of farmers and their families of high order and in telligence, and they are doing as good work as any similar organization in the State. At the recent State Grange they competed in. the literary and degree contests and secured second prize in both. At the recent Pomona Natal ex emplified the work in the first degree, aud it is certain that if other granges did as well there would lie very many more members of the order in Col umbia County. ENFORCING THE LAW The gambling den at Milwaikie. Clackamas County, has been closed. All that was necessary to effect this was for the district attorney to notify the gamblers that he intended to inforcethe law. As soon as they were convinced that he was in earnest they quit, be cause they did not want to face the pen alty of resisting the law. Strange as it may seem to outsiders, the citizens of Mitwaukie do not approve the action of tll3 district attornny. In fact, if correct ly repotted, they bitterly res-;nt the closing of tits gambling institution, for no better reasnii than because it con tributed liberally t the city's finances. They could sen no harm in the tiger to long as his claws are tipped with gold. They were living in a sort of flnaneiul fool's paradise, from which th'-y were bound, sooner or later, to be awakened. Gambling brings to any community a Bet of very "undesirable citizens" and iu time other crimes are sure to be com mitted. Homicide and gambling ran close together and Milwaukie has ken very fortunate not to lie called upon be fore now to f"Ot the costs of criminal prosecutions a the outgrowth of Hi- ex istsnce of Us pet gambling den. What it considers its misfortune is in reality a blessing, to say nothing of the, fact that no community has a right to violate a state law for lis own financial profit. Mr. Hedges is to be congratulated ujwii his 'obedience , to public S-'litlment, which is the real cause of the enforcis ment of all laws. - ' ' . - "Regular as the Suu"j is an expression as old as the race. No doubt the rising and setting of the sun is the most regular performance in the universe, unless it is the action of the liver and bowles when regulated wit'i Dr. Kins's New Life Fills.
