Bradley county, Teun., covering 825 square mllea of territory, bad an as essment valuation equal to $0 per acre and an average tax rate of $1.03 pr f 100 when agltntlon In favor of good roads began there. After a long and earnest struggle Uie advocate of Im provement were able to carry by small majority a measure which pro vided for tbe Issuing of bonds for $90, 000, to be nted for improving their pub lic thoroughfares. Opponent! of the scheme fought It In the courts and thus held back the Work of advancement. but the conrta decided that these bonds would be valid and ordered that tbey boiil.t be Issued. Warned by the hostility which hod so delayed their work, the advocate of good roads began cautiously to carry out their undertaking In such a way as should make convert! If not warm frleuda of their opponents. Competent engineers were engaged to plan and to direct tbe work, and tbe most efficient machinery was bought, every part of tho work was done In tle best way practicable and every care token to get the best results for the money. Before balf of this $00,000 waa spent all parts of the county clamored for ad ditional money for road improvement of all their roads, and there was tittle If anr opposition to providing for Issue of $180,000 worth of bonds for this purpose. - A result of this was that land! which could not find buyers at $8 to $10 an acre so long ns the roads were either dry. "dusty and roucli, steep and badly oli-;ned or wet, muddy and stony were easily salable at $13 to $30 per acre eveu before ..the work of making the roncln rood wits completed. Another re sult 1 that the county seat has gained Importance ns a manufacturing town nu.l Is consequently growing In popu lation. In prosperity and In ability to pay n Inrgor share each new year of tho cost of improvement. B. W.
