Over in Montana, not so very far from Oregon, thev are mint; the bondsmen of three State Treasurers to recover the sums of money which the State Tteas- urers received aa interest upon stale funds deposited in banks. The Attorney General of that elate thinks the public treasury is entitled to, something like $240,000 which has beeu pocketed by in cumbents of the Treasurer's office in the last few years. What strange ideas some attorneys have of their duty to the state in whose service thev have enlisted! Hasn't the Montana Attorney-General any sense of official courtesy ? Oregon ian. In Oregon this graft has beeu in ex istence tor so many Tears tuat we sup pose it may be defended as a vested right. Its continuance is due to the neglect of the people in not providing some sensible legal method of caring for the State's funds. The constitutional salary of the State Treasurer is less than 11000 per annum. Then he gets fees, we believe, from insurance companies, and draws compensation as a member of different boards. But bis chief source of revenue is undoubtedly the interest paid him by the favored bankers with whom he deposits the State's funds. This is illegal, and we suppose he could Baiting Powder Absolutely frit A wholesome cream of tartar baking powder. Makes the finest. . lightest, best flavored biscuit, hot-, breads, cake and pastry. "POLITICAL VKAU Away back in Massachusetts the Dem ocrats have nominated for Governor a youngster by the name of James II. Hig- gins, who, it is said, will not be twenty- one rears old until the votes aie in. Probably they took Jimmy for the nomi nee because they thought he was too young to be a hardened criminal, and if elected they might expect some degree of holiest government. You have to before he I An editor, after rnnning up against 'the public for a little while, printed the following, says an exrhange: A man mav use the mole ou the back of his neck for a collar button; he may ride freight train to save three cent" mile he may light the lamp with a splintc to save a match ; he may stop his watch at night to save wear; use a period for semi-colon to save ink. and nasture his erandmother'a srave to save tav. but a man of this kind is a scholar and a gen I tlenian compared to a man who will take pica your politician oeiore ne is ripe , ...,, ,,, ,,., .,ked to iv for polling ou your hands. HOW ABOUT BENGEB The Hon. Binger Hermaun, ex-con' gressman, ex-commissioner of the Gen eral Land Office, is traveling in Europe, Mitchell is in his grave, Williamson has been convicted, and others of the minor offenders have received their merited punishment, but smooth, oleaginous Binger of the double hand shake is traveling in Europe. What's the matter? Has the prosecution gone far enough? Hermann was the chief offender of them all, and yet it is safe to say be is enjoy ing bis trip in foreign lands without the least foreboding as to the future. RE-APFORTIOXMEXT. then you haven't got a sure thing. It is not very probable that Jimmy will be elected Governor of Massachusetts, but if he is he will possibly make a record as a boss that will excite the envy ot Abe Ruetf. Famous Mi-ike Breakers. If you or I, kiud reader, should be so unfortunate as to be placed in a poeition where it would become necessary to steal a meal of vituals to keep down the paiign of hunger, and g"t caught at it, its dol lars to doughnuts we would be looking through a checker Iioard just as quicklv as an indignant juJ'e could pass sen tence. And if the an.ount stolen should amount to a few cartwheels, we shudder to think of the number of lonely years we should have to serve the state. But it would be different if we happened to be a Thaw or a Velgutl Possibly the measure that will excite the most interest in the next Legislature will be the reapportionment of senators and representatives to the several dis tricts of the State. On a steamer of the Hauiburg-Ameri- j can line a novel apparatus for the pre vention of seasickness has just been tried, it being the invention of Koht, Otto, of Leipsic. It consists of a com fortable arm chair, the seat of wMc'i is vibrated both perpendicularly and trans versely by a small motor placed under the chair which is connected with the ship's electric plant. A motion is thus given to the chair which is found to counteract the movement cf the ship.
