OK K(i ON MIST Entered at the I'ostoffice nt St. Helens, Oregon, as sceoiul -class mail matter. Issimn Kvkry Friday By E. II. FI.AGO, EDITOR AND rKOPRIKTOR. lOrXTY COI HT. One copv, one year, in advance. . f I W Six months & Legal notices 35 cents per line. FRIDAY, June 22. UKVi. It iseuitl that the Western I'nion Tel egraph Company charged over $1,000,000 for mesjages that were s npwed to le telegrKulicd San Fram-tco ami then fent them by can iers and thiotigh the United Slates ninili. A number of the insurance coinniiies have concluded to shave their San Fran cisco losses 23 cents on the d 1U.1". The six-bit companies, it is safe to say, will do very little business hereafter on the Pacific Coiist. The Oregon City Enterprise is dvvot ing t great deal of space to funeral sermonetts over the political remains of tieo. C. Brownell, who it reiterates is dead, dead, dead. If ho is so very dead would it not be as well to quit stamping on the remains? Let's not have any more kicks coining from the farmers that we are governed by politicians and professional men and that they are disregarded. One of the best men Oregon can piodoce, against whom nothing enn be said, who ha done more for the farmers than any man in Oregon, and a farmer himself, has been turned down for Governor fur au oily politician and turned down by the farmers themselves. New berg Graphic. The next Oregon Legislature will con tain seven Democrats only, six in the Senate and one in the House. This will be the smallest Democratic representa tion in many years. Of the thirl j mem bers of the Senate, 14 are holdovers. Of the 13 elected to the Senate this year, seven signed Statement No. 1, aud two pledged themselves to support the Re publican voters choice for United States Senator. Of the 00 members of the Hoase 39 signed Statement No. 1, and six pledged themselves to vote for the Republican voters choice for United States Senator. In other words, since I Bourne, a Republican, received the pop ular vote, there are 54 members of the Legislature pieced to his support. It requires 40 to elect. County Court met on June l.'ith, the principal business being the making of the orders declaring prohibition in force in Auburn. Union, Apiary and Warren pte cinets. The orders are uniform and read as follows: "Now on this day this matter coming on tor the consideration of the court upon the ab.lraet o( the vote cast in said precinct at the election held on June 4th, UKKi, lor and ajr.imsl prohibition, pre pared by the comity clerk lor the in formation of this cuitrt, audit appearing to the court that a majority of the votes cast in said Union precinct at said elec tion are "ior prohibition," uud the court being tolly mtvised in the premises; it is therelore ordered bv the court that the sale of intoxicating liquors in said Union precinct, Columbia County, Oregon, bouuded as described iu the ' petition of the electors of said precinct praying that such election be ordered bv this court, be and the same is hereby absolutely prohibited except as in the Local Option Liquor Kleclion Law provided, until such time as the qualified voters therein, at a legal election held for that purpose by a majority vote decide otherwise." An ontcr was made committing Wm. McDonald to the Home for the Aged. Mary Laurer was allowed relief in the sum of $40, on the petition of Wm. KruU and others. In the matter of the petition for appro priation of land for improvement of load from Apiary to Rainier. Petition allowed. Fetilion allowed for Cue improvement of the Pringle road and J. Hickenbottoui for damages. ' Petition of G. V. Armstrong and otheis for bridge across the Xehalem River postponed until the June meeting of the court, and the same action was taken in the matter of the petition of J. R. Dallas. The certificate for the plat of Whitney's addition to Scappoose was signed by the court. An order was made for the cancellation of road warrants 4032 and 4U!0. The clerk was ordered to make out the apportionment of funds for the different road districts, including all but ten per cent of the road fund. A large number of bills were allowed and these, together with the appropriation of road funds, will be published in Thk Mist next week. VERNON I A ITEMS. H0ULTQM AND ST. HLHS. At the school meeting last Monday eveni ng a com m ttee consisti ng of Martin White and W. II. Powell was appointed for the purpose of consulting with the people of Houlton regarding the ad visability of consolidating the two school districts. An attempt to accomplish this has, as we understand, been hereto fore made, but it appears that local jealousies blinded the people to their own interests and nothing came of it. Then the St. Helens school house was built and the matter dropped, though it is believed a majority of the jieople were favorable to consolidation. So far as St. Helens is concerned the matter is in worse shape now than it was then, ow ing to the fact that we have an e.vpen sive school building. There can be no doubt of the benefit of consolidation for both the districts. Of course the school house for the joint district would have to be located at a point as nearly central for the school population as possible, and if put mid way between the two towns it would in time be fully as convenient to the ma jority of the children as the present school houses are. The consolidation of the districts means a consolidation of the funds, the interests and the ability! oi uie people oi tne districts. It means practically a consolidation of the two towns and an understanding and appre ciation of their unity of interest. It means economy, even although the im mediate cost may involve a considerable sacrifice of funds. It means a high grade school that will accomodate all the pupils of the two districts at less expense than we are now paying for two compa ratively inferior schools. It will beneut j of several miles, and it is probable that every foot of property within n radius I it would result iu a very considerable j extension of the limits of what will be the consolidated district to accomodate the wishes of those who will desire to take advantage of superior school facili ties. It is the most important proposi tion that has been brought before the people of the two districts and no per- Geo. L. Country people are invited to bring dinner and stay all day. C. A. Maluisten went out to Forest Grove Friday, returning Saturday. Mrs. Lucinda Wilkinson, of Houlton, is visiting her daughter, Mrs. C. Vr Mellinger and family. About twenty-five of the boys and girls, with some of the older people, took Claude Chamberlain by surprise Friday- evening last, in honor of his Klrd birth day. Everybody had a jolly time and mine host, after he got himself together, was as gay as the gayest. Frank Tracy went to Portland the first of the week to visit his wife, who has been stopping with her sister Nellie, who is reported to be quite seriously ill. Ed Sesseman went out to Forest Grove Tuesday with I). W. Keaey' team and wagon, for a loa 1 of merchandise. C. W. Mellinger and wife I. me pur chased the did Wilkinson home-tead, aud think some of making it tneir fu ture home. They want to tee lint just where the new railroad goes below the city. (-chrx.il election!', so far ua we have learned, resulted as follows: In Tucker district Charles liergertou was elected director and C. W. Mellinger clerk. In the town district Mrs. Minnie Sword was elected director und S. V. Malinstcu clerk. Thin district also voted to purchase an acre of laud of G.
