Oct. 27, 1906. Mr. K. II. Flnirg. Sit. Helens, Or. We are aiyry to refer again to this matter; IhjI Mr. Mitchell compels it. lie has addled the role of agitator and baa charged decent people with crimes which, if proven, should senJ tbeip to the penitentiary, and. when called before the Grand Jury to assist in investigating these matters, he has utterly failed to "make good." The truth ia U4 Mr. Mitchell fur nished the Mayger story to the Oregon. ian and then had the nerve to deny it jtnd attempt to saddle it upon the editor pi iua iiift, w ho ia the Oregoman'a reg' jilar correspondent and generally re- fpuusible for mliatever appears in that J per Iron, this county. 0"HK BOSTON LA DIRS AND EQUAL SUFFRAGE. The Massachusetts Association oopfed La the extension of Woman Suffrage is pstuling its document! to every country editor in Oregon, in the hope of defeat ing the passage of the (tending amend tent to the Oregon constitution giving the women of Oregon the ballot. If tliese womun do nut think the Massa chusetts women are capable of intelli gently exercising th full ri l;ts of citi xenship we have no objection to tl.fijr saying so, liut that is no reason why the intelligent women of Oregon should be denied this privilege. Locally there may be some ground for their objection, as Massachusetts has a larger per centage jjf illiteracy than any of the Pacific Coast States, ami even the women of the Asso piation, while they arj probably edu cated in certain lines, show remarkably jtoor reasoning powers. Says the pam phlet hefore us : "If thccierit nissanf iznorant women's votes are Ui be tul.lwl to the great mass pf ignorant men's votes, there will he .constant nnie demands for work, money, bread, I iure, eic,'' In Massachusetts this sort of logie rn ay be all right. There may be in that state "great mass" of ignorant women They may predominate, and it may be fiecessary for tljejr own good that they pe guided and tciiitrolwl by the cultured )liea who constitute the society with I he long name. Out here in Qregon it (s o liferent, mere are very few women whose lack of education or intelligence Boots them for the suffrage, and this IQrtof an argument will have no influ ence whatever with the men of Oregon. This is very distinctly pn American state. i pioneers were men, of far more than average ability, and it is the well edu rated sons and daughters of these pio ' peers who are now asking for woman the full exercise of the franchise. We assure fie Boston Indies that they will add a 'inns of intelligence" to the body politic, and as they l.aye ajl the bread they need their first demand wili prob ably be f.ir pie, and no true Bostonian would deny then, that necessity of life. While here tliey tried their hand at a little huuting and Bonnie, and with some success.
