Ilavsng the largest circulation of any pa per in Columbia County. BUTTING IX We have received numerous pnmph lets from tbe "Massachusetts Association Oil posed to Further Exteiition of But frsge to Women." The object is, as we assume, to pursuant) the men of Oregon lo deny to the women luil equality be fore the law, for no person is another's equal before tbe law unless having equal right witi that other to partici pate iu the making ol the law ana tne election of officials to construe and en force tbe law. In Oreg-m women arj better protected by law than in most other states, though there is still au inequality of property rights. We hold making their just treatment depend upon our sovereign will, and our great them In a sort of gentle peonage, excuse for doiug so is that force is the basis of law, and that none ehould par ticipate in the Risking of laws txcepi those who have the power to eu force tlieio. In plain words this is the old doctrine that might makes right, and iu one iorm or another has been popular with all oppressors throughout the world's history. It is looking backward instead of looking forward. Tije home is the foundation of government, and no true man carries this doctriue iuto his home circle. The maternal edict is en forced, if necessary, by the father, and when the two arrive at a decisiou it becomes a law for the govern me lit of the family. Does any one tor a moment suppose that a law passed by an equal suffrage rote would fail of enforcement because of the inability to bear arms? Womem do not go to war but they bear tbe burdens of war, and every bullet that reaches its billet causes anguish in the iieart of some woman who had no part in tbe legislation that may have been re sponsible for the war. The denial of the suffrage should be limited to those not possessing the liecedsary educational qualifications. At present we restrict it to the male sex and deny all women no matter Ujw well qualified, the right to pariici pito in our elections. Would we not gat better gorernment if we disfranchised ignorance and per mitted intelligence to vote, without re gard to sex. Oregon caa settle this que tion with out the aid of Massachusetts. We n.ed no Buttinskis to determine any public question in this State. Tbe Portland Journal insists that ail candidates for the Legislature, uiider tbe direct primary svstem, should pledge themselves in writing to vote for that candidate for United States Senator who receives tbe largest number ol votes at the election in Jnne, 1906. This would seem to be the intent of the law, and if it is literally complied with the next United States Senator may be far from being tbe choice of a majority even ot his own party. It is probable that there will be numerous candidates, and that the one receiving the largest number of votes at tbe June election way have a smaller proportiuate follow ing in the Republican party through out the State than Mayor Will iams bad in the city of Tortland. If it is true that there is no necessity of law for an honest man, the Republicans who voted lor Mayor Williams' nomination in the Portland primaries were as ful'y bound to vote for Mayor Williams in the city election as the elected rcpresenta lives next session win km voie iur uie i . . ,., . . , , . s natorial candidate receiving the largest , , Jiuuiuer ui vows m me tfuwe cieeuuu. This for the reason that, so far as the senatorial election is concerned, the June election is intended to be in the nature of a primary contest. Actual, y jt will probably be an attempt on the part of the democracy to foist upon the republican party a candidate who will be as objectionable as possible. The Democratic party in this State is in the bands of clever opportunist!?, who, taking advantage ot the disorganization in the republican ranks ate doing their best to becure place ami power through every available pretext. They hold the voters of tho minority party tightly together, and with this as a nut) us they seem able to convince a large iium Iter of Republicans that they are in duty bound to bhow them their non pnitisanKhip by voting fr the strongest partisans thai can beiuur.t in the Demo cratic ranks, It is the old mugwump game imported from the E.t.-t for the benefit of the Oregon Democracy, and Republicans are taking sides wit i them tor the reason that heretofore the man agement of the republican party liun nut len satisfactory to the rank and Hie uf the voters, Ring rule and b wiatn have prevailed until the voter has kicked over the triioes and declared that he j'll not vote for n candidate whom he had no iitind in lionanating. Columbia county has the boss logging camp of the Northwest, that of the Veon ti 1'elton Company, near Rainier, The ftllowiugcorrv!iomtciiceon the suhject was published in the Portlaud Oregonhui of Jnl 9ihi PORTLAND, Or, July 8, l!W5. (To the Editor) In a mti.l issue of your per we notice the fact that the logger in the Kufala camp dispute the claim fur record-holder made by the crew of the tfton-Pelton camp. We enclose you copy of letter recently received from Mr. Yeon relative lo their most recent performance, which, al though not stacking up quite so much in the nmtur of board feet of measure, amouuu to a much more creditable per formance iu regard to tho number of logs taken in. When the Eufnla camp made Its record, it only handled 1-1 logs where, as you will note in Yeou'e case, tt'2 lag were handled. The difference in the scale is dun to the fact that the timber rut in the Waahiugtou camp ts considerably larger than that iu the Raiuier camp, but tiie real credit is due to tbe crew w ho got in the maximum number ot logs, as the doi.key engines in eitLer case were as capable of handl ing the larger logs as they were the smaller ones, and the actual test comes iu when getting hold aud letting gJ ol that many log iu such a short time considering the fact that a certain amouut of clearing away and blocking had to be done and that after the lugs were brought to the roll ay ther had to be loaded on cars and taken away to make room for those which had to fol low. It is apparent to anyone that the handling of 1U2 logs as against 121 in a given tiuu is greatly in favor of tbe Or egon camp, aud it is a very safe state ment to say that had the logs run at large in this camp, that the SjD.QOO foot mark could easily have been passed. While it is true that these exceptional performances iu logging do not bear a very important relation to the reaular workof logging camps, the) are still of sufficient interest to a commuuily of this kind to make them worthy of publi cation in your paper. II. V. CORBETT, President Willamette Iroa & Steel Works. Mr. Y eon's letter I Hows : KAIMEB, Or., June 19. Mr. W. II. Corbett, Portland, Or: Dear Str Our boys are going around with a yarding record broom on their shoulders once more. Latt Sunday, the 18th, one ol our hojk-teuders, Alex Chisholm, with his regular crew of nine men, aud the addition of one extra rollway man, one snipper and one fireman miking a crew of 12 men, Charles Lovgren as engineer put in teu bonr's work, 1112 logs that scaled 271,210 feet. Loirs sealed by Mr A. Handler, the N. P. L. Go's scaler. '. had Mr. Handler come down lo scale so no one could say that I scaled the logs at the butt end, as they always say in a case of this kind. The yarding wai done from the roll- way back lor low leet. tveryttung went on nicely w ith ihe exception that everything a very dry and made a good test on the 10x13 yarder, as you will notice by the cuiount of logs as well as feet that the engine bad t j keep go ii'g to get an average of l'J.2 logs per hour. Tbe boys are alt feeling happy and so am I, J. 15. YEON. TheOregonian, on Monday last, paid an eloquent and deserved tribute to the medical profession. No class of men have done mire for the comfort of tbe human race and nine have been 1cm selfish than the regular ph sictans. It is in tbe ethics of their profession there shall be no secrecy as to the discovery of remedies, but that all should be con' tnbuted to the advancement of the pro , . . , fession and the good of mankind. There a time in: i muse come to an wnen the best efforts of tbe practitioner will be unavailing; but even then science light ens the pangs of death and deprives the parting of soul and body of many of its terrors. The National Medical Associ ation, now in session in Portland is com posed of the brightest and best of tbe medicos of the country and no doubt their meetings will be productive of great good to mankind.
