In a country such aa this, with Its broad areas of fertile land available for Industry, and with lta vast resources of the raw material of Industry and of manufacturing power, agriculture la bound to demand the services of more and more men. Hence the piano serves sa eara to these deaf children. The piano Is not the only wsy to I wch sound, but It is the most effec- tire. Until the present system was adopted the pupils followed the teach er In a rhythmic exercise by "step ping out beats or clapping tbelr hands. But It was still better when they could recite their "Hey Diddle Diddle" to the music In the song books. That would be tht perform ance of a little class. Older ones drill on such verses ss "Merry, Merry Christmas Bells." They do not sing these songs, but they make tones In harmony and they recognise a tune after the teacher has ( played a few measures. To test them she begins "Home. Sweet Home," and the chll drn " ,mlle' I am sure," she says, "that they would recognise 'America' if a band were playing It on the street, for they would get the rhythm. They like to sing when It Is being played, and once In Tremont Temple, when the pupils were there for public school exercises, they ssked If they might Join In the chorus, and I let them, and hey did mnch better than people who 'have no ear for music. They take such de light In the 'Star Spangled Banner and all those national airs that I think they ought to know them. Pleasure is not. however, the main object of our music. Our serious school work cen ters around the plsno snd It is of great Importance." Unlike other schools for the deaf. the Horace Mann teaches exclusively by the oral method and discourages the use of signs and the manual alphabet At a Turkish Bookstall A writer, who spent much of his early life In Turkey, observed that Turkish books and booksellers were amongst the curious features of the country.
