for the reason that no enterprising per
son with means ever took the matter
in hand until a few months ago. It
would have made happy all who take
an Interest in Christian associations to
have attended the dedicatory exar-

American Young Women'a Christian
Association at 6 Rue de Turin, five
minutes' walk from the business cen
ter of Paris, where. In -a private house.
with garden In front, at least thirty

tivity of Mrs. John J. Hoff, who for
several years has stirred np the en-

ders. On the opening day the sunlit
drawing and dining rooms were crowd
ed with American residents who lis
tened to a bright discourse from Mrs.
Hoff, a witty speech from John Wsna-

Paria; an addresa by Mrs. Beach,
whose Interesting Sunday evening
meetings for American students are
wel1 attended, and a prayer by Rev,
Dr - Thurber; then tea and lemonade
awed, after which every one ran

The piano Is not the only wsy to
I wch sound, but It is the most effec-
tire. Until the present system was
adopted the pupils followed the teach
er In a rhythmic exercise by "step
ping out beats or clapping tbelr
hands. But It was still better when
they could recite their "Hey Diddle
Diddle" to the music In the song
books. That would be tht perform
ance of a little class. Older ones drill
on such verses ss "Merry, Merry
Christmas Bells." They do not sing
these songs, but they make tones In
harmony and they recognise a tune
after the teacher has ( played a few
measures. To test them she begins
"Home. Sweet Home," and the chll

I am sure," she says, "that they
would recognise 'America' if a band
were playing It on the street, for they
would get the rhythm. They like to
sing when It Is being played, and once
In Tremont Temple, when the pupils
were there for public school exercises,
they ssked If they might Join In the
chorus, and I let them, and hey did
mnch better than people who 'have
no ear for music. They take such de
light In the 'Star Spangled Banner
and all those national airs that I think
they ought to know them. Pleasure is
not. however, the main object of our
music. Our serious school work cen

A writer, who spent much of his
early life In Turkey, observed that
Turkish books and booksellers were
amongst the curious features of the
country. "The Turkish booksellers,"
he said, "baa a soul above trade. He
rarely or never attempta to push his

attention from a likely purchaser to
one who (being a lover of literature)

valuable books so greatly that he can
