Yernonia OSce, April, 190-L To the Emtor. Large numbers of fanners and settlers coming, and expected to come, this year to our coast, gives us a reasonable hope of securing a part of these people as ad ditions to the population of our beautiful valley. Every property owner and settler knows to his sorrow the drawbacks which have thus far reUrded emigration and progress here; progress which has smiied upon other parts of Oregon which have not one-fourth of the natural resources with which God has enriched the hills and Tallies of the Nehatlem. The worst of thesg drawbacks is solely attributable to tba fact that no way of in,rress or out going between the Nehalem and the out side world has as yet been provided by the mossbacked public men and million aires of Oregon. The result has been a loss in population, and no advance in thj Nehalem country, ulthou'h lyinjj a? it does at the very door of Portland and Astoria. . . After an illness of three months Laura E. Merrill, eldest daughter of A. A. Mer rill, died at her home at St. Johns. Or., April 6, at noon. Her death resulting from tuberculosis hastened by typhoid fever, The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Hawkins, of Clatskanie, Or., whose discourse could not tail to Dnng comiort to the bereaved relatives and mends as - sembled to pay the last sad rites and look for (he last time on all that was mortal of the dear departed one whose beautiful life had gone into immortality. Heart were sad and heads were bowed with grief as we thought of the young life just budding into perfect womanhood, the life that had been so unselfish and useful to others now cut down in its first open ing. Yet we could not but thank God that he gave to us that sweet life for a few short years, and we felt that it was now blooming in beauty where tears can not dim the eyes and death cannot enter. She was laid to rest at the family burial grounds at Deer Island, Or. Laura was bora at Deer Island, Oregon, August 22, 1884, living there until the fall of 1900, when they came to Portland where she graduated from Couch school. She leaves a father, two sisters, Mabel and Betha, step mother, step brother and sister and other relatives and friends who will never cease to miss her till they too shall hear the summons "enter into thy rest."
