The editor of the M 1ST will never cl.iim that it ii the duty of a cilijcu to vote for Jhe nominees of his party without rvjird to tlieir liones.v or fitness for the j.o;tiou to which they umpire. That U tlie "yel low dog" theory of politics, an I is re sponsible for a jfre.it deal of the corruption which admittedly exists in public life. The man who IsMsts that he has never voted anything but a straight Repuhlu'.m pr Democratic ticket during a long litc time must, on several occasions, have voted for unlit or dishonest men, pud have contributed knowingly and willfully toward the mismanagement bjiJ corrup tion that uasat times festered in the body politic. He has not been as good a citi. en a lie might have been, and his example is not worthy of emulation by the rising generation of voters. I'artics, however, represent principles, nd the enactment of these principles in to laws vitally affects the business inU-r-psts of the country. Every busincs. man, fvery farmer, every mau and child in the United States is tints a::ected, and every vote that is cast h is a bearing, remote or jjirect, upon the success or fail :re o! the principles of the respective parties. Or ganization is necessary to su.cess, and in prder to have eflectiveorguji jtion every advocate of any set of princip.es must give his support to the party representing those principles; and the only way that this can be done is by supporting the party's nominees whenever thev are com petent and reputable men, cr equally so as their political opponents. Nor should the citizen be too ready to find fault with the nomiuecs of fcis party. He should preserve the Mis souri attitude and request to be shown whenever his political opponent informs luu that John Doe, his party's nominee, is a very wicked man. Chances are that those who nominated John know as much about him as do his political opponents, and that he is fully equal in moral an I mental worth to the opposing candidate, i Attack upon personal character is the favorite resort of a desperate minority led by a itw whose main object is the capture of one or two fat offices an 1 not particularly the good and welfare of the country. This classof office-seekers never say anything about their political prin ciples. They are unwilling to go before the people with a declaration of faith and ' rpst thtjr hopes of ucctss thereon. They favor the attack in detail. They aaopt fhe tactis of the wolf pack, which hangs upon the rear of the builalo herd, hoping for an accident to some individual, that they may spring upon him and pull him down. They are the opportunists of poli tics, and not its true leaders. They do not buiid up a partyorganiiation, but are willing to combine with any old thing in the way of a party and to stand upon one, two, or thrve platforms, as may seem necessary to secure individual success. They wait until the majority party has held its convention and then they begin the work of spreading dissatisfaction in j its ranks. In one section of the county I the majority voter is approached with the i flea that his section did not receive the attention to which it was entitled or that its favorite son was thrown down by a corrupt combination from o:ne other section, or that such a candidate was not a resident of the county '-when Mount Hood was a hole in the ground," and so on without limit. We do not say that such tactics are being pursued by the minority pajty in this county, though we may say si; later on. i'his is merely a generalization, and is given for what it is worth. Tardy justick. A di--j.-lch from Washington to the Otvgnnian, dated the 11th Inst., says: Major I.ang'it was today asked by the Chief of Kngimcr to submit estimate fur repairing and rtisinjj the top level of lcer Island dyke, in the Columbia Kivvr, o as properly to control the clnnnel lit th it point. It is evicted that the tires sarv land will le tnken from the emerg ency fi n The Chid of engineers acted upon the request of SeuHor Mitchell. 1 , This is .111 act of tardy justice to the j property owners of IVer Island, besides ' Iwing a work ot public necessity. The : building ol the dyke opposite St. Helen forced the water of the Columbia over agiinst IVer IV ml, necessitating the construction of a counter dyke at that point. The dyke at IVer Isl.ui 1 was con structed so that the inner portion was lower than the outer, and the front o( the dyke hsvicg been broken in several p' ices, the wnter pours through, sailing the channel an 1 cutting tiwav the island, to the grc it detriment of the property. A the g n-eminent exercises the right of eminent domain and builds dykes wher ever it sees tit, it become its duty to keep such public improvement in thor ough repair and to see that they do as little injury a possible to the property owner. Major I.sng ctt's course in this matter has heretofore leen exceedingly arbitrary; but it is possible that he tuav pay some atterjtiou o the request of the Chief of Engineer. j HOTICi rOH PUBLICATION, IVcpirlmi-nl ot lh ltrUir, Uua uihee l orvnuu i.liy, Or nn March . two. If anyone doubts judge Doan's popu larity at Rainier they should have heard the cheer that greeted him when he alighted from the train on his return from the Clatslcanie Convention. It is safe to tike a man at the estimate placed upon him by tho-e who have baen his neighbors for years. The Oregonian says: "We would re spectfully suggest to the Republicans of the Second District (that's us) that it i a good titne for honoring in the breach that ancient custom of kniiing Repub licans in order to elct Democrts." Yea, verily, the time has come. Politics make strange bedfellows; but when it comes to the Democrats lying down together the bedclothes are liable to get torn. There is sure to be trouble. One and one are sail to make two; but ii you attempt to unite two opposing prin ciples the sum will be one big row. CLATSXAN.E C0R3tSP3NEENCE GOOD WORK DONE. The Republican County Convention held at Clatskanie on Saturday last was a representative body of Republicans, gathered from all parts , the county foi the purpose of putting in nomination a ticket that would command the support of Republican voters throughout the potmty. . If it does this it will be success ful from top to bottom, and Columbia Coucty, for the first time in many years, Will have an entire set of Rernbdcan officials. There can be no good reason why this should not result. The con yention was a fair one, the can ii lates are worthy and reputable men, and the party has a large majority in the county. We ask the Republican voters to consider seriously whether it is not time that the majority party took charge of the o;nces of this county? Are you willing to ad mit that yoi are incompetent, or that, like a lot of children, you can not put aside your petty spites and quarrels and Mr. M. S. Dippold an-1 W. S. Dippold, of shingle mill fame, of the Nehalem, were in this city Wednesday making ar rangements to haul tlieir winter's run to market. Mr. John Rederson of the lowe Ke ha'.em was in the city one day this week taking in the sights and trading with our merchants. Mr. W. II. Conyers and daughter Laura are both down with the La Grippe this week. ! It is said by some of the wise ones of j this city tnat another wedding will take i place in tqwn within a few weeks, the boys are getting up all the cow hells and other musical instruments for the occa sion. Mr, R. H. Mitchell, late of the Rainier Gaette, an 1 chairman of the Democratic Count Central Committe.wa in the city recently making arrangements for the holding of the Democratic County Con vent'on to be held here next Saturday. We have not heard whether the Demo crats of this precin:;' hel 1 their primary last Saturday or no'; if they did the at ten iance must have been very small. Mr. Bert Tichenor sold his here this week, and left for San Diezo Cal. It is said by some of the wise ones that there was a girl in the case. Uncle Geo.
