The suit of Muckle Bro. against the Lone Star Lumber Company for possession of the mill property at this place was decided : Saturday last by Judge T. A. McBride. The Lone Star Company leased the mill from Muckle Bros., and on July 1st. last, Livesley, the president of the Company, , agreed to purchase the same for the sum of $10,000; but on that date made a tend er of the money and found fault with j the title, The suit was then brought and ! defendant filed a cross bill, claiming , defective title and asking for $15,000 damages for betterments made by them , to the property. The decision quiets the I title in Muckle Bros., and orders the de- fendant to pay into Court the purchase ! price within thirty days, in default of which plaintiffs are awarded $175 per month rental from July 1st., 1903, Muck I le Bros, to give a warranty deed to the property in question. It is generally thought the mill will revert to Muckle nros., in wnicu cae u i neuevea ii win be greatly improved and run to its full capacity, giving employment to a large number of men . A. F. & A. M.St. Helens Lodge No. ' 32, A, F. & A. M., had a very pleasant and profitable session last Saturday night when Dr. Edwin Ross received the mys teries of the entered apprentice degree. After adjournment there was a social ses- sion in the hall underneath the lodge the hall underneath the lodge , room, where coffee, cakes, and sandwich- eiwere partaken of. Among the old- ' timers present were Brothers J. H. Swag- Jer, T.A.McBnde, J. George and Bro. Ken- nedy. The lodge is having work at nearly every session, and brothers who reside outside of the town are earnestly requested to attend. St. Hklkns Waterworks The City Council, at its meeting Tuesday night, ordered a thorough overhauling and re pair of the water system of this city, in order that we may have a pure and abun dant supply of water during the summer months. A five-inch pipe will be put in from the reservoir to Milton creek; from Milton Creek to the Northwestern Coop erage Factoryja three-inch pipe; from the factory to the water tank in St. Helens a two-inch pipe. The new tank is to be covered, and sheathed to prevent the sun from shrinking the staves. Councilman Miles wa appointed commitee of one to arrange for the purchase of land suffi cient to enclose the reservoir with a fence. Drownrd from thk America W.K. Smith, of Portland, was drowned in the "Willamette Tuesday afternoon, after res cuing Zoe Brown, daughter of Mrs. L. M. Brown, from a similar fate. We learn that the young ladies of the city have or ganized a basket ball team, and will give an entertainment in the near future. T.ie greatest kick ever made in this part of the county is being made byour citizens on account of the high taxes this year. ' The First Prohibition Convention of Columbia County met in Houlton March, 5th- It was a large and enthusiastic meet' ing, nearly 100 being present, besides numbers ef message were received from different parts of the county from sup porters with expressions of sympathy for the work, promises of support, etc., both financially and at the polls. All were badly disappointed in not hearing Oliver W. Stewart, of Chicago. Mr. Stewart was on the train from Salem which was late and so be failed to make connections. All were pleased with the convention work, excepting, of course, some who came with the hopes of getting a handle to a club to hurt the Prohi tick et. G. L. Tarbell, of Yankton, elected chairman, and Cljde Stewart, of Rainier, secretary of the convention. Committee on credentials: G. R. Hyde, Yankton; T. B. Lott, St.Helens; Wilfred Miller, St. Helens.
