There are two proposed road improve meuts of the utmost importance to this county. One ia the road crossing the Nehaleru mountains from St. Helena to Pittsburg, and the other on the road war between Ctatskanie and Mist. Mora in the The recent meeting of the Slate Pros Association held at Salem was largely attended, and the most successful in its history. The Association is placed pn a better basis of permanency, on account having been entertained by the Salem Press Club, Colonel E. Ho fer, of the Journ l, an. Hon. Boh He drii kc, of the Statesman, being among its honored members. Nothing Columbia county was not largely rep resented at the good roads meeting held in Portland last week. John H. Scott, of Marion county, was re-elected presi dent of the association. The county judge of Beaton county, stated Ibis his county was appropriating $1 for road work, wherever $1 was subscribed for that purpose. Coos county reported that it was giving $2 for fl. In Clack amas county it ban long been the cus tom of the county court to appropriate was too good for the visitors, and the an amonnt equal to that subscribed by nvepliuu was excellent. S. L. Moor- head, of the Junction Citr Times, was elected president, and Albert Tozier, re-elected eecretarv. The burglars, who broke into the .strong box of the vault of the bank at heridan, 'i auihill county, and gettiu away with a swag of $7,000, were more fortunate t the Neaberg bank a few nights previous. As New berg the bank breakers held the inhabitant of the town at bay for several hours, while they fried repeatedly to blow the safe ppeil without suecess. At Sheridau the parting hot fired by the mayor went wide of its mark, as U. bandits disap peared in the heavy fog. the citizens in the vicinity of the pro posed improvement. The Columbia couutv court last week only appropriat ed $300, when the citiaena subscribed $1200. ee The Scappoore correspondent this week urges the importance of improv ing the road to the Nehalem. Senator M. A. Miller's arraignment of the present educational system, while advancing what may be considered as radical ideas, couuins some practuial suggestions. It has long been agreed 'hat the boysaud girls are given a smat tering of snbjects &a useless to them as a fifth wheel to a cart, while more impor tant matters are made thereby to suffer. Fine Apples at Scappoose. For a good many years Mr. Asa Hola day, the nurseryman of Scappoose, Ore gon, has been demonstrating by exhibits at meetings of the Oregon State Fair the fact that Scappoose can grow apples good enongh for anybody. In addition to bit nursery bu.-inejs Mr. Hoi ail nv baa an orchard. It is not a very large one hot he generally has a few carlo.) of fruit to sell and he always gets high prices. A few days sgo Commisxiotier Newell visited in an official iv Mr. Holadav's nursery and orchard. At tbe time Mr. Holoday was harvesting the crop from a two-acre tract of Northern Spv apples. He had sold the apples for $1.25 per box, Mr. Newell said he had never seen such a sight in the nay of apples before. There were at least 1,100 boxes on the two acres and the largest and finest Nor thern Spies he had ever seen. He made a most careful search and failed to find a single apple which showed a worm or any trace of a worm. There are more plares than one, two or three in Oregon where the (inert grade of apples can be grown when the right man undertakes me jot. the Oregou Agru-ulturUt and Kural Northwest.
