This paper is kept on file at 'the Ore ton I'resa Association Room 9. Hamil ton building, Portland, Oregon. OUR fUTVKJt SOU CSS ATS ESS, There is great future for fanning op eration! in Columbia county that ii on diversified plan. It ha already been demonstrated that the logged off landa aril, produce any cereal, gran, or Varie ty of fruit that can be grown in the Willamette valley, and, if anything the q tality ii better, aa the soil is more pro ductive. A dairy section, it has been profitably teeted, and it has also been demonstrted that it surpasses the Hood River country in the quality of first pro ducts. The country extending back to Yankton and through Itachelor flat to Sappooee is comparatively level, and will yet be the richest section of Oregon. Oaty a small percentage of the land has yet been put under cultivation, but the tusnps are gradually being taken out of the ground a little at a time. The ex hibit at the open Grange meeting at Yankton is an indication of what this toon try will produce. Potatoes, 150 aacks to the acre, aud other varieties of vegetables in like ratio. These same conditions apply to the soil in every sec tion of Columbia county. There are two great sources of possible revenue from Columbia county soil. First, the tim ber for lumber and wood, and second, the products of the soil. Farming, yet rill become one of the greatest indus tries of Columbia county, but it will be ol tbe diversified kind that makes com munities wealthv. Lotfvdn vouipany; unlaw Kay tor plaintilt. That's right, Mr. Editor; keep tho ball rolling until w have a rumpara-tm-ly level road to tide water; then St. Helens will gel the Nehaleiu trade whieli goes to Forest Grove, and this mean a great deal. Hut, alas! a The forest reserve policy, as it ia being promoted in Oregon, to form base for lieu land frauds, will come as near pat ting the Republican party out of busi ness M anything ever. The President and all interested better drop Eastern college: theories long enough to realize that l ha reserve system and the frauds connected therewith are a long wavs from the Abe Lincoln homestead policy on which tbe Republican party got first great start in business. It wight be a aane policy to restrict grants of pul lie lands to men with families who are bona fide hcme-iuakers, or persona de claring their intention to make a home for a family, and not give them the deed for the 160 acres until they have a fam ily of al Jaast two children to ahow evi- denea ol good faith. Thia would be mora ia accord with President Roose velt's anti-race-eouitde talk, than allow I rig great corporations to gobble np the public lands by means of the scrip frauds. Salem Capital Journal. Since Jujy 1st ijje people of St. Hel ens baye submitted po the most incon yenient jpail service imagipable. The first mail goes oat to Houlton fboat 9:30 in the forenoon, and ail let. fere to tbe Nehalem country and down river points, must lay over at Honltpn ntil the next day, For a wonder, this tjjorniog trip does connect with one mail the 10:21 to Portland. This However, may be more of a matter of accident than design. It is a fact that there is no afternoon train mail to Port land. The afternoon service is still worse. This outgoing mail does not connect with anything except thiu air. It also Jays over at Houlton until tbe next day. For while under the provisions of the new schedule, the afternoon mail feached here from Houlton about S -'clock, bat this give people an oppor tunity to get their mail too early in the 47. It is now nearly six. when the mail rsache here, Another change or fmo, and there would be no mail con flections whatever between St. Helens and tbe train. l look as though there might be a onspirapy s but off St. Ilelens supply of mail entirely.' " I Under the present schedule, pereons fa various sections of fte County, writ ing U) (tie conqtv teJ on jmportant matters, are uaahja to get repiy ondr three cr four days. fiecsuse St. Helens was made tbe per manent county seat, is no reason that it should rub it in (a other people in the county iu Jhe matter of mail facjpties. Tks change of the schedule on the first day ol last July was an outrage, and why the superintendent of tbe mail service for this district, does not person- i ajly investigate the matter, witlio-t tak-1 jng atwnsons' elae's word for flp status pf tb araaant oondit-ons, is a wonder.
