OUR fUTVKJt SOU CSS ATS ESS,
There is great future for fanning op
eration! in Columbia county that ii on
diversified plan. It ha already been
demonstrated that the logged off landa
aril, produce any cereal, gran, or Varie
ty of fruit that can be grown in the
Willamette valley, and, if anything the
q tality ii better, aa the soil is more pro
ductive. A dairy section, it has been
profitably teeted, and it has also been
demonstrted that it surpasses the Hood
River country in the quality of first pro
ducts. The country extending back to
Yankton and through Itachelor flat to
Sappooee is comparatively level, and
will yet be the richest section of Oregon.
Oaty a small percentage of the land has
yet been put under cultivation, but the
tusnps are gradually being taken out of
the ground a little at a time. The ex
hibit at the open Grange meeting at
Yankton is an indication of what this
toon try will produce. Potatoes, 150
aacks to the acre, aud other varieties of
vegetables in like ratio. These same
conditions apply to the soil in every sec
tion of Columbia county. There are two
great sources of possible revenue from
Columbia county soil. First, the tim
ber for lumber and wood, and second,
the products of the soil. Farming, yet
rill become one of the greatest indus
tries of Columbia county, but it will be
ol tbe diversified kind that makes com
munities wealthv.

The forest reserve policy, as it ia being
promoted in Oregon, to form base for

ting the Republican party out of busi

and all interested better drop Eastern
college: theories long enough to realize
that l ha reserve system and the frauds
connected therewith are a long wavs
from the Abe Lincoln homestead policy
on which tbe Republican party got
first great start in business. It wight
be a aane policy to restrict grants of pul
