Dillurd brought into thli office one day thie weuk an Irish po tato, which illustrated what peouliar prank nature would sometimes plttj. The potato bad Uien dumped on the collar floor, In a dry, ipongy, appar ently Moles condition, and through ome peouliar process of nature' deal ing it made the bent of the i tut lion and began the work of regeneration wllh good result, as the potato wai literally full of miniature "spuds," not attaehd to the potato from with out by eprouta, but were in the body of it. near the aurface. At nearly very eye there wa crowing a Utile Eotato, backward, however, into the An order made In tbe county court at ft last session, empowering and di recting the sheriff to execute deed to Columbia county for all land hereto fore bid in by the county at tax calee, and not subjeot to redemption, i one of considerable importance. Itiapoa eible now for penon to select a de sirable piece of land owned by tbe county and make application to the clerk for its purchase by depositing the eash, and at the next regular sit ting of the court tho property will be ordered transferred. By this order the county now owns all lands pur chased by it two years ago, and pre vious to that time, and is willing to dispose of the same for the amount of it claim against it. A bowling contest now on between teams composed of local bowlers in this city seems to be the center of at traction with the "sporting" element. A tournament of twenty-one games it to be played, three game each niiiht, two nights in the week. Dr. Cliff, Q. O. Mayffnr, Jame Rise, J. O. Watu, K. E. Quick and Thomas Muckle, with James Sheldon, a oaptain, are pitted against Andrew King, David Davis, Martin While, W. A. llarri. O. A. Hull and C. II. Johns, with Marion Gray, as captain, and interest is at fever boat. Nine games have so lar been bowled with the twoteams"neok-and-neck in tha race. Friend Gable is proving himself a genial and Impar tial coachor, carefully guarding the prerogatives of each individual. The outcome is very uncertain. Each team Is averaging 600 points each veoiog. Tbe large jam of logs whioh-riss been in Milton creek, near the Scap-pooe-8t. The jam contained several million feet ol choice fir log which It wue absolutely impossible to move without an im mense bead of water at the large dam, which rcsultrd from the rocent heavy rains. While this lam and other lots of logs "hung up" In the oreek have been an unfortunate thing for their owneri, it has also been an obstruc tion to the progress of operations of tbe Oregon Wood Company, who de pend to a considerable extnt upon an open creek to' operate their flume. Over a thousand oords of wood were awaiting thie opportunity for unob etrucled passage down the oreek. The good resulis from this half days work can hardly be estimated. The logs represent the labor of nearly every man living along Milton creek, as that industry it chief in that vicinity, and no logs had been run out of ttie creek Inm nAiirltf t(l VfiarS James Muckle saya the jam contained about 112,000 worth of log. Philbrook, Mr. Bruce Enyart and Mis Bessie Glendye, both of Deer Island. November, this year, has been quite a severe month. Stormy weather con tinued from the month of October. Ever since the severe frost of Novem ber 8th, conditions have been less fa vorable lor greens and vegetation is now iu a comatose state. The partition between the surveyor' and school superintendent's offices in tbe upper story of the courthouse bat been lorn out and one large, conven ient room now takes tbe place of the heretofore unhandy quarters. The sheriff will occupy tbe room in future. This office acknowledges the receipt of a box of choice apples and pears from Mr. D. U. Pope, grown on the Quick farm, at Bachelor Flat. That fertile section i peculiarly adapted to ibe growth of excellent fruit as well as all varieties of vegetables, hay and grain. Thanks. A landslide on the Astoria road, above Rainier, has caused some trouble to the operations of the road during tbe last wek. However, traffic ha continued and tbe difficulties will be overcome in a few days, and it will not be necessary to tranfer freight and passengers. ; The torpedo boat Davis, which sus tained some injuries not long since by a number of tubes in the boiler blow ing out while making a trial trip, and hich resulted in the deatn ot seven persons, made anotner trial trip isbv Tuesday, passing this place twice in the afternoon. The recent rains have come as a God-send to the logger. In many parts Of this state and Washington, whore camns have been operated Ibis summer, there are hundreds of thous ands of feet of splendid loga awaiting a sufficient supply of water to float tbem to larger streams. Ruv. Mr. Philbrook" will preach at Bachelor Flat next Sunday at 11 a. m. The Rev. D. B. One of the most pleasing features of the entertainment will be the torohlight flag-raising, immediate ly following the programme. Every body is cordially inviiea 10 aiveuu uu lake their basket. The amount of taxes being oolleoted now ia not very extensive, end the col lection on the 1897 roll is practioally done. An occasional straggler, who had stood the sheriff off as long as was possible to do so, finds his way into the tax oollootor's quarters and deposits his mite to assist in maintain ing our county governmeui.
