"Lionx May It wave O'er the Home of the Free and the land of the Brave." ' iu America rejoices at tha early term ination of the war with Spain. The docu ments are signed and peaoe ia restored after a brief yet destructive war. The period lasted only about 103 days, yet the de trac tion of life wa great and of property much greater. Save the treacherous act of blow ing up tbe Maine, the United States has suffered the loss of little if any property, and while comparatively few lives have been sacrificed there can be no estimate placed upon tbem. Valuable territory has been acquired; the main object for which we went to war has been accom plished the freedom of Cuba; our abiliity, as a nation, to defend our integrity and preserve our honor bas been sufficiently exemplified; our navy, which was rated as far inferior to that of other nations, has demonstrated that America bas a navy, and the uniruiaity with which the people supported their commander-in-chief Is fitting warning to nations like Spain that we are not in a state of revolution, and they bad better keep off the grass, Hundreds of thousands of volunteers are today sorely disappointed because they had not the op portunity to display their valor by being called Into service, and the willingness with which the people pay their proportion of the internal revenue tax and the money ad vaneed by private individuals for the 9300,' 000,000 issue of war bonds all testify to the greatness and ability of our nation to prose- cote any similar nndertading. One groat .and important feature of tbe result is the fore with which we see and understand the necessity of building a great canal. All these things aire direct results of tbe war, and nothing else could have so forciby demonstrated our greatness as a nation STATE BCUOOii FVSD8. The latest occur rence to stimulate our belief is the an . nouncement of a Columbia county man of hi candidacy for tbe presidential chair. We always recognized ia Sidney Deli a man of great possibilities, but if Sidney expects to reach the goal by advocating air lines to the moon and the free and unlimited coin age of silver, we entertain fears that it will be some time from now. If a portable sawmill can be operated for f 1000 a month, Colum bia county could keep a mill in operation six montns oi eaen year tor the same amount of cash and assessed days' work re ported by supervisors at the last January term of commissioners' court, and the prin cipal thoroughfares planked tbe first year Under the present system of collecting road tax and working the roads a sawmill would accomplish little more than is realized at present, but when, if we ever do, make road tax and property road tax payable to the tax collector, and these funds apportioned according to the present number of days' work and cash received in each district, and V get road commissioners, then can we expect to make progress in the improve ment of our highwajs. The present system I s gigantic farce and a rank injustice to the more progressive citizens of any county, It answers the purpose of the drones and aborigine very nicely, but to compel our later civilization to endure its haphazzard results i anything but justice. The Astoria Herald, in an article on bettor roads, say "f b trouble with Clatsop county roads is they are just barely wide enough to allow team to pas. Brush and trees line either side of ths road and prevent the sun shin ing In to dry the mud-puddles," If the roads were cut out as wide a the path of sin it would make little difference In tbe condition of the road until different means of collecting and expending public funds on tbeut are improvised. ness center at no far distant time. 1 Clatskanie' citizens are progressive I and seem to let no opportunity slip I by for improving their condition. Even the building of the railroad from tbe latter place to the lakes has done nothing to help tbe place. At Dyes only about 250 peo ple remain, and but lew more at 8ksg- way. The future of these towns de pends greatly on the amount of gold brought out from the interior during tbe summer months. If a few mil lions in yellow nugget reaches civili zation within the next few weeks, from the Upper Yukon, the scenes of last winter will prohibit be 'repeated at Bkagway and Dyea, Quite a number of Astorians are still in the above- named towns, several of whom have interested themselves therein business.
