List fall it was 11 25 per cord, and no demand for it eve) at that price, but now the learner ie paying 3 on the dock here and soowa are paying from II 50 14 91 75. The price paid for cutting in the woods has also advanced, and is now 80 and DO cents per cord. There is a good demand for wood east of the mountains now, and not very much feeing cut. City Election The regular annual city election for the city of Bt, Helens took place Monday eveniag. Not a wery large vote was polled, indeed not ri.uch more than half the vote of year 3d The regular ticket nomin ated at the caucus last Friday evening was elected, a follows : President of the council, E, K. Quick; councilman, James Dart, K. Cox, 0. W. Blesealey, ' end II. It. Cliff; recorder, O. A. San ford ; treasurer, David Davis; marshal, A. Jtobinson. The new officers will assume their duties nest Monday. Lmtt Columbia Bivt Water. ' From long eiperienoe ship captains fceve found that the witter of the Co lumbia is the best that can be secured te fill their fresh-water tanks, says the Astoria Budget. Nearly every deep water vessel takes on water as they down the river. The favorite Iilaon is below Walker's island, wbsre t is always found perfectly pore. A vessel recently returned from the old country with one of ber tanks filled with water that had been taken from this place. It bad been over a year, but the water was still pure and in ex cellent condition. The reason given for this is that about nine-tenths of it is melted snow. Scarcity or Chikamrh As odd s U may appear, it is a fact that the coming fishing season will be handi capped by the scarcity of Chinamen to work in the canneries. The largest handler of Chinese labor in Astoria, wbo furnishes Chinamen to six can neries, said the other day that owing to the opening of new canneries on the Bound and so many Chinamen havioa- srooe to Cbiaa on a visit, tt was difficult to find the oeceaeary number of Chinamen having a knowledge oi the business. The treasury department ba eeoently ruled that a Chinese laborer who has slOUO worth or prop- arty can return to China and speud one year there, and hundreds of China men are now taking advantage of this pporiuoity. EQDIRBCL-ExTXRMIRATIlia MaCHIXX. A man of Umatilla county baa per fected a machine for the purpose of " extemtinatins squirrels. He calls it a anulrrel-Doisoner. and olaims that by diligence the entire state csn be rid den of the pest in one season if his machines are put into use by the farm re oi the aneotcd districts. The ma chine consists of a bicycle frame in' verted attached to a solid bsse, that is nlaoed on a vehicle that a man oan uronel over the farms, the pedals and attachments connecting the power to the rear wheel axle In position for use the same as bioycle. Attached to the wheel are a number of fans that com cress the air and drive it through the air. A preparation of sulphuric acid tas is prepared by a (amp auacneu to the machine and over which arc burned the ingredients to form the gas. The fumes are driven down the flume or tubes into a rubber hose that is placed in the squirrel's burrow. The fana are nrooelled by the operator from the pedals, and the force drivee the fumes down into the bole and smother the squirrels to death. W. 8. Mason has been nominated by Motion aa an independent candidate for ,li office of mayor of Portland. Mr. Mason served in that rapacity oe fore and nude a good offioer, and it is xpeoted be will be indorsed by the two contending repuoiioan tactions. ' The fishinc season for 1898 opens next Monday morning at 12 o'clock. Great preparation is being made by our local fishermen, and we believe they anticipate a successful season in a financial way. We believe that fish will bring 5 cents per pound the greater part of the season, and if this prioe obtains, and water conditions are lavorable, fishermen will reap a harvest. Mrs. A. Inveen, residing at 720 Henry St., Alton, 111., suffered with aciatio rheumatism for over eight months. She doctored for it nearly the whole of this time, using various remedies recommended by friends, and was treated by the physiclsns, but re ceived no relief. She then used one and a half bottles of Chamberlain's Pain Balm, which effected a complete cure. This is published at her request, as she wants others similarly biuioihu to kuow what cured her. In other words, money orders may now be Is sued payable at that office. Hereto fore orders could be Issued there, but none could be paid. The 2-year-old child of Mr. and Mrs. James Bice in some manner got a nail in its nose, tbe first of the week, and it was found necessary to obtain sur gical aid to extricate it. Doctor Cliff was summoned and placed tbe little one under anesthetics, and at onoe re lieved tbe child by removing the nail. Tbe fishing sesson will open on the 10th lust, on the Columbia, and an Astoria paper says that tbe price ol flub will be better than last year, and that cold-storage shipments will br much larger than ever before, and the prospects are that there will be fewer oou-resident fishermen employed, all of which will tend to make the season a prosperous one. The many friends In this connty ot Mrs. A. Tucker, formerly of Vernooia, but now of Oregon City, will be pleased to learn that that lady is fast recover iin from ber recent illness, which her physiciana feared would oulminate in consumption. Word was received from Oregon City Tuesday that Mrs. Tucker was greatly improved, and hei ultimata recovery is only a question o) a short time. Two years ago B. J. Warren, a drug gist at Pleasant Brook, N. Y., bought a small supply of Chamberlain's Cough Bemedy. its sums up the result at follows : "At that time the goods were uukaown in this section; today Cham' berlain's Cough Bemedy ia a house hold word." County Treasurer Wharton has re oeived more thsn enough money from tbe sheriff to pay the state tax. Tbe amount of tbe indebtedness to tbs state this year is $4765 16, and the treasurer has received up to last Mon day morning, 1(3559 55. The balance of $1804 39 is not applicable to the payment of county warranta because of a custom followed in the county for many years of first paying tbe state tax. as required by law, and then pay ing the school tax, aa it is conceded that this tax il needed early in the year, in order, to maintain and con duct, the school during tbe pleasant season, whioh we believe to ba not s bad custom. Dr. Bartel, a hypnotist artist, ex hibited his talents before a small crowd in this city last Friday and Saturday nights. Dr. Bartel, as a hypnotist, perhaps understands his business, but this feature of the programme plays but a miuor part in the real intent of tbe doctor. He claims to be able to cure any kind of ailment, and of course, the impression becomes preva lent immediately that the wonderful cure is effeoted through his hypnotio powers, but such is not the case. The doctor has a little bottle of some sort of drugsand after he believes he has his patient nnder meemerio oontrol he administers the drug, hands the bottle to the patient, and asks in return the small fee of $7 60. ' Americans are the most Inventive neoule en earth. To them have been issued nearly 600,000 patents, or more than one-third of all tbe patents issued in the world.
