It any man justified m the belief that the government is going to coin money and give it to bim any more man mo miller will grind flour and give it away, or that the farmer raises hogs and make butter free of charger indeed there teema to be many who believe, or pretend to believe, that by Home stroke of divine providence, (for it cannot ooroe from any other source), money is to come to them without an effort on their part; but they will surely idle sway their time in vaiu while their opportunities pass by un improved. Labor alone creates wealth. T. HELENS, OBaGON, OCT. . PROTECTION AND PROSPERITY FOB PRESIDENT Wm. McKinley, of Ohio. FOR VICE-PRESIDENT Garret A. Hobart, of N. J, Trk man who earns the present dol lar by daily labor cao not be made to believe that it buys too much of the neoessariee of life. Thb demopepocratic ticket with two tarts evens np with the snake on exhi fcition at the Banquet saloon in this city, with two heads. if ine "great crime of 1673" was responsible for these hard times, why was it that times continued good for twenty years after the commission of that crime;" and why was it that the depression was not felt until after the erection of a democratic president and congress in 1892 pledged to the en actment of a free trade law 1 Watsobt, the populist candidate for vice-president, said in a speech at Alma, Nebraska: "I am here to remind the populists that our purpose will not have been accomplished when we we merely open our mints to the coin age of silver. We are willing to go with the democrats that far, but we don't expect to stop there." Perhaps some of the old-fashioned democrats who think of veting for Bryan do not fully realize that they are keeping step with a party that demands fiat money unsecured by either gold or silver. Thb calamity howl that "the money of the country is in the hands' of the rich," is as shallow aa all their other vagaries. Did anyone ever hear of a country where the money was in the bands el the poor? If the money ef wa nca oi yesterday should be given to the poor man of today, would not ' the rich man of yesterday be poor and the poor man of today be rich! So the money k always in the hands of the rich, and it always will be so. The money is in the hands of the rich for two reasons, namelv: that if the rich lost the money they would not be rich, ana u the money were given to the poor they would be the rich. 11 us not be content in dealing in governments! abstractions. - While we would guard with unerring vigilance ana with a firm voice and a eteadr de- termiaed purpose defend at eviry haz ard every vital principle of oar govern ment Mvotvea in international and do aseslie policy affecting territorial rights end interests, it is well If at the rams time we would wipe from our statute books every vestige of legislation by whomsover placed there which stands as a menace to the promotion and healthy growth of the great industries of this country , and which tends to degrade the husbandman, the tiller of the soil, the day laborer of America, to the level of the menial hordes of Asi atic and other foreign countries. Hon. Jonn 11. Mitchell. Thb electiou this year is peculiar. at least, in one particular. There are any number of democrats who are go ing to vote lor McKinley, not because, in most instances, thev are anv 1 democrats than heretofore, but be cause the party with which they have heretofore beeu idonlilied has wan dered away from the old line policy to oue which threatens disaster to every material interest of the country. It 18, for the time being at least, neces sary for them to support the republi can nominees in order to protect their own business interests as well as to preserve the standiug of the nation which is placed in jeopardy by the declarations of the Bryan platform. For these reasons thousands of demo crats who have all their lives stood up consistently for good government and the preservation of our institutions have expressed a willingness to, and no doubt will, be found in the Mc Kinley and Hobart procession on the oa oi .November. Its Work of Belf-Destruotloa. Biattli, Wash.,8ep. 30. One of ths most prominent populists of King county, a man who doss much of ths editorial work for tbs fusion party, was tailing a friend of his the other day that, as Wellington f ayed for night or Bluchsr, he prayed for sleetlon day, "for," he said, "ths way scores npou soo fee of our supporters are deserting our ranks means, I aui afraid, defections from our ranka at the polls." How do you account tor ths desertion T his friend salted. Well'" he said; "ths great trouble with our partv is the undeniable fact tliat we have in our ranks a lot of men whose whole ambition is for personal gain. Many of these are outcasts from other parties, and their records are such that when decent. Intelligent and law-abiding citiiens hear this claas of niea expound ths political doc trine of populism, the effect Is exactly th reveres of what is intended." I hsve tried to equelsh. this class, but whenever I try I sm sat upon, and motives entirely foreign to my ideas are attributed tome. Had ths election taken place in King county a saonth ago, before this class got in their deadly work, I believe we would have carried the entire ticket through with a fair majority, but I question very much if we could do it today, and what we will do a month from now, at ths rate the bet tor element of our party is deserting us, I dont dare think of. "If the fusion party don't carry this elec tion in this county and state, that party might as well forever quit, for the prime cause of their defeat will be what I have I just told you." Bryab has not yet accepted the popuuBt nomination, althonrh be was nmiuea uiai ne naa oeen swallowed np by them more than two weeks ago. That astute free trader probably thinks be can keep his popnlist brethren waiting and looking for his acceptance until it is too late for tbem to nomi nate a man in his place in case he does not want to offend Sewall by ac cepting Watson as hie running mate. Mr. Thomas Watson, Esq., the popu list nominee for vice-president, has bos yet Deea notified of his nomina tion, probably for the same reason that Bryan has not accepted. The popu liste may be withholding their notifi cation to Watson, waiting to see if it win do necessary to place a bead to me wateoa ticket. It is not so much the -need of more aaoney created as it is the need of hav ing what already exists in circulation This can only come about by the cesa tion of such utterances as come from we lips of such men as Bryan, Till . man, Alteeld and Pennover. No man is going to invest money so long as . u spins oi anarcny ana tncendiar lam is proclaimed from the stump by we Mmwi 01 a great national party, and consequently the wheels of indus try are stopped and the money of the country placed in safe keeping to await the outcome of the present state of chaos which is threatened by the elec tion at Mr. Bryan, and it is a safe pre diction that the past four years has been oo comparison to what may be expected during the next four years should Bryan be elected. If All the silver in the world were coined, how would the workingman gat it Boless be had something to do to earn it? The answer is plain ; the wadcingman could not get one dollar unless the industries of this country ware in operation; (and the free coin age of ailver would not start them) aoa taoee inauttnes can not operate I (Pacific Rnral Press.) Ths best remedy against ant is cayenne pepper. Spread it on the shelves of the store closet onder the paper that covers then. The best way to clean a Brussels carpet is to lay It face down upon the grass, and beat as it lies there, then by the corners drag it over clean grass to brush off the loose dost When flavoring has been forgotten ia a podding or cake, the fault may be reme died by rubbing the desired extract over the outside of th. cake as soon as ft is taken froas the oven. nnea poiisniag mirrors, windows or picture glass with whitening, th. best way to use It Is to have it in muslin bags. Dampen the glsss lightly, tbsn rub with ths bag and polish off with a cram pled news paper. A solution of vinegar and salt is th. best thing to eleaa polished iron as well as copper. Heat the salt and vinegar in the frying pan or ether dish. Rob off the stains, then wssh it off and scour with sand soap. The best dress to wear in the kitchen in hot Weather is a comfortable loose belted gown of cotton turned back at the throat and mads with sleeves that reach only a soart distance below the elbow and need not be rolled up. An excellent substitute (or 'potatoes st a dinner ia nee, cooked in milk and well salted, pot into a dish and browned In tb. oven. Hake a hot lemon sauce and pour it over the rice when it is taken from the oven and just before th. dish is sent to the i table. , To keep the varnlshed'wood of furniture looking fresb and bright, it should be rubbed thoroughly with oil from time to time. Only a little oil should be used and that carefully rubbed in with a flannel nntil it seems to have all gone; otherwise it will catch the dust. Stained borders of floors will reanira do ing over once a year if worn places are not to Become noticeable. The stain and var nish may be boagtit and applied separately. or mixed together and applied at once. The latter is, of course, tbs readiest method, bat the former is perhaps the more lasting. A remedy against creaking soles is to sllow the soles to stsnd over nigkt on a platter containing a small quantity of olive oil, so tbat they will become saturated with it. This will protect them against damp ness; and if tbey are carefully wiped off on the sole, they will not grease carpets and rugs, though this treatment is Intended I pecially for walking ihees.
