How changed the condition pre' vailing aince the election of the present administration! It wae elected npon aa issue that proposed tbe reveraal of the economic policies ibat bad brought to tbe nation these marvelous results. Since then our energies have been stifled, hope and courage have almost fled, and instead of tbe chorus of plenty, want's gannt band has pressed close npon many of our people. Pros trate industries, idle wheels, smakeless furnaces, palsied capital, idle labor, unsought production bave cried in vain for help, and the only answer of "triumphant democracy" was the Wil son bill, with its "perfidy and dis honor," that wrecked oar prosperity and rained our industries. It would be mighty hard to disprove tbe epigram in General Harrison's New York speech to the effect that "business never was disturbed by the prospects of republican success." Caa-DiDara Bpckitex's chief dis tinction lies in tbe fact that he is the man to whom Grant sent the famous message, "No other terms than an on conditional and immediate surrender can be accepted. I propose to move immediately npon your works." The recent republican majority rolled np in Vermont does not indi cate that the Bryan comet is gaining in favor. Jin tact, what bas already resulted in Vermont, to-wit: an in creased repuDUeaa majority, may reasonably be expected in many other states. It does not require a tele scope to discover that tbe Bryan ticket is losing ground, and that very fast. Huts is an excerpt from one of Mr. Bryan's recent speeches : "What I de nounce is a protective tariff. levied purely and solely for tbe purpose of protection, it is false economy and the most vicious political principle that bas ever carted this country." What, then, can the lumber interests of the Pacific coast and particularly of Oregon, expect at tbe hands of Mr. Bryan, should he be elected? through tbe ballot No more thorough condemnation of the democratic national policy could have been made by the voters than in this instance. There is a reason for all this which ought to be obvious to every thiokiug person. Maipe is manufacturing state, snd one of her most important industries is lumber. Her population is made np largely of working; people who depend entirely on their daily labor, which is directly affected by the Wilson law, and under that law they have not only been de prived of their former wages but tbeir opportunity to labor bas been almost entirely cut off by reason of closed in due tries. Is it any wonder, then, that they would cast then ballots la repu diation of tbe parly who is responsible for their depressed condition? The leason is so plain that no man ought to be misled. BBYAJf, WATSON, SEW ALL. A vkbt large per cent of the popu lists of Columbia county were formerly democrats who left the old party, they say, for the reason that it had become so corrupt f hey could no longer affil iate with it. But their support of Bryan now for president shows that they are willing to swallow another dose of corruption which only a few months ago made them sick at tbeir stomach. What bas become of the great fundamental principle of popu lism which they were clamoring for so vigorously! in a word, what bas be come of their consistency, if they ever ., naa anyr The organization of democratic Me Kinley clubs is not an uncommon thing these days. In Chicago there is a democratic MeKinley club com posed of several thousand members all of whom have heretofore been demo crats. A MeKinley club was organ- izea in Astoria last Tuesday and a large number of democrats were added to tbe membership roll. Tbe same re ports are received from other sections of the country, and while many dem ocrats are averse to oining a club they willingly assert their intention of supporting the lepublican nominees in ui coming contest. Candidate Bryan's tribulations ap pear to deepen. Thomas E. Watson, the populist half of the tail of the pop- oc ratio ticket, who bas been and is still wagiog wsr with the Arthur Sewall part of the tail, now turns sgainst the bead end of tbe conibina lion. Said Watson at Dallas, refer ring to the desperate resolve of tbe populists to corral Bryan and force him to either accept or reject tbe pop ulist nomination, "l will pledge you my word that Bryan will sneak out. and he will accept. Bryan can't throw away 1,800,000 votes. He will accept me as his running mate. If be does not, the ticket will never be elected.'' Thus does Watson present bis ulti matum to Bryan and his managers. It is plain talk. It sounds like business. Mr. Sewall cannot carry the ward in which he lives," says Wstson. 'He cannot carry the town in which be live." Of course this is true, bnt the same can be said of Bryan, for it is entirely safe to predict that Bryan will be beaten in bis state, county, town. ward and precinct. But this makes no difference, for he is the sole head of the ticket, and as such has rights which should be respected. "Every man ought to know that if Mr. Bryan is to oc elected be will be elected by tbe votes which the people's oartv gives him," exclsims Watson. "If he carries Nebraska, where he lives, it will be the Tom Walsoa populists who boding of a false prophet. It bas triumphed over sll its traduoera at home and abroad. It has made the lives of th masses of our countrymen sweeter and brighter, and bas entered in Domes of America carrying com fort and cheer and courage. It give a premium to human energy, and awaken the noblest aspirations in th breasts of men. Oirsj of Kew York's most influential democrat, Ex-Lieutenant Governor William F. What is this plat form? There is not a line in it that is democratic that is not good; there is not a word that ia bad, and therefore undemocratic, that has not been stolen or taken from the populist platform. joase as republicanism is, subversive as it has genii-ally been of the best in terests of the country, it is infinitely preferable to populism, which is next oi kin lo socialism. I admit the im possibility of drawing a platform that in all things will be satisfactory to all dsmocrata. But never before have we been asked to make a compromise be tween national honor and national degradation. Tbe dsmocrata who re sponded to President Lincoln' call to ' take up arms for the maintenance of the nation's honor did not cease to be tiemocrats because the proved them jelvas patriots." will carry it for him." Unqueationa oiy tnis is gospel, me populists are tbe second party in the West and two or three states of the South, and the democrats the third, and the demo crats know this. Yet Brysn will continue to dodtre the populist notification committee, Knowing that if be accepts the nomin ation tbey offer him be will re Del thousands of his present democratic supporters, and if be reiects it be will lose the populist vote. Meanwhile, when tbe news of the large republican majority in the Maine election of last Monday and the overwhelming rsDu diation of Sewall by his own stats gets to tne country, tbe "parting of the ways" between tbe Sewallites and tbe Watsonitsa will come. "Sewall can't carry his own family," truthfully de clares Watson. It will be clear to a good many popocrats by that time that man who cannot carry anything has no business on a rsvolutionarv tirVet in turbulent times like these.
