GATHERED BY THE SOCIETY : PSYCHICAL RESEARCH. - FOR The Phantom of a Gloved Head Explana tion of the Coffin on the Lake Shofre, Sevwiwl Strange Prophecies aad Ware Inga lavestiaates the Yarn. A diiigeut huut hits been uinda for years after stories of telepathy, mind reading, Second sight, clairvoyance), crystal vision, mid so on, by the Society For Psychical Research, and great pains have been taken to obtain corroboration if possible. One of tbe most experienced and in defatigable investigators in that organ isation, Frederic W. H. Myers, em bodies scores of those narratives in a paper printed in the report of the pro ceedings of the Society For Psychical Research. A few a.e selected for re pro duotion here to illustrate some of the supposed workings of the mysterious faoolty in question. IX J. Parsons, a physician in Sweet Springs, Ala, says be discovered years ago that be was able to sue things. mentally, which had happened hundreds of miles away nud many years before. Be wrote in 1801: "While iu company with Dr. Trotter of Islington, Ala, 1 could see before and near to him a deli cate hand on which was a dark red kic glove. The hand was all the time iu motion. I called his attention to it, and he was much surprised. I told bim tin baud hud history, and if he had tit objections I would be pleased to know it Be said: 'I was traveling iu Cuuadi; on the cars, and one day we run up to u train that bad been wrecked a little while before. I went to the wreck, and about the first thing that I saw was a young lady lying npon the ground dead. One hand was naked, and one was cov ered with a dark red kid glove. ' bl atantly npon his ottering the wurds the dark red kid glove and tbe hand van ished." . Subsequently the Dr. Trotter here mentioned sent a fall account of the ac cident and the conversation with Dr. Parsons to an officer of the Psychical Research society in reply to inquiries. Be corroborated tbe foregoing story fully, adding that the gloved hand made strong impression on him, "which has remained to this day, about 40 years. " Be was astounded at Dr. Parsons' re mark to him nearly 80 years after tbe event, and even yet cannot understand bow that person should have broached the subject, inasmuch as Dr. Trotter had never to his knowledge mentioned the sight of the dead girl to a living souL A large group of incidents fonnd in this collection occurred almost exactly at the same time when the ' percipient ' received a corresponding impression. Shipwrecks, more trifling accidents, the recovery of a lost dog and tbe position in which a watch that had been dropped in a bayfield a few hours before still lay were paralleled by vision, either in sleep or a half waking condition. Thus, on tbe morning of Oct ?, 1885, the wife of a Chicago man asked him, while they were both dressing and before either of them had left their sleeping room, if be had ever known a person named Esdala Be replied in the negative. Then she narrated a dream in which she saw a coffin on the lake shore so marked. Later in the day the man discovered in tbe morning paper of that date an account of the disappearance of William EL Ks- daile, bnt with no theory as to his fate. After elaborate inqniry it seems to be established that this was the first public mention of tbe fact that be was missing. For several days the Chicago papers re ferred to the topic, bnt suggested that be was alive, bnt insane, and would be fonnd. The notion of snicide was scout ed. On Oct 10 Esdaile's dead body was found. He bad been drowned. Visions, dreams or impressions wbicl. seemed to be prophetio figure frequent h in Mr. Myers' catalogue. Occasionally there wonld be only a vague impnl, a sensation. A railway engineer stcpj.ei bis train, be could not say why, an. sent a flagman ahead. Be thus stoppci an express train coming toward him an. on the same track, bnt. out of sigh around a curve. Baving landed in i strange city, a man was picking bis waj along in the dark, when he was im pelled to change bis route abruptly. Be fonnd next day that a few more steps wonld have thrown him off a dock. A father's anxiety about a son in another part of the country increased to such a point that the family had just decided to summon the boy borne when the news of bis death was received. Again, of tbe prefigured events some were only a few seconds away; others perhaps months distant. A naturalist wonld discover, without search or suspi cion, exceedingly rare ferns or moths almost instantly after an image of the specimen was found in his mind or a bint wus whispered in his ear by some unseen agency. . Accidents, and even deaths, were predicted weeks in ad vance, aud sometimes on a specified date, and the forecast was fulfilled. A man dreamed of seeing the headstone of his own grave inscribed "Jun. 9. ' As the word "June" is seldom abbreviated, be believed that this was meant for "Jan. 9." Soon afterward one of bis children died on June 9, and he consid ered this occurrence a fulfillment of the supposed prophecy. Bowever, he died himself several years afterward on Jan. 9. . .. The experts who have undertaken tbe study of tbe phenomena here described are eagerly looking for more stories of this sort Dr. Richard Hodgson, S Boyl ston place, Boston, is the American sec retary and treasurer of the Society For' Psychical Research, and when he gets bold of a new yarn he proceeds to in vestigate tbe matter carefully before re porting the facts to headquarters in London. Perhaps the first Sunday excursion ver ran by a Methodist church was tbat whiob recently ran over the railroad from Albany, with a thousand passen gers, to hear the Rev. "Syndicate" Wil son preach tbe gospel and to help drive atan out of Glouster, O. " Two months ago this evangelist, un known, a Methodist circuit rider from a backwoods charge, came down the Hooking valley from Coolville and preached in the schoolhonses by tbe way. At the crossing of tbe country roads he put up big plain lettered plao- irds tbat read: In IS TIME TO BEMEMBKR YOUR BINS.! "Syndicate" Wilson'a congregation exceeded tbe capacity of tbe room at his command. Snnday bad been set aside as "old soldiers' day." Before sunrise the people were com ing over the hills to the great gather ing. The Methodists at Albany chartered a train, but members of all the other denominations went on it So did the band. The pastor of the Methodist church here, tbe Rev. J. Atkinson, a fine speaker, rode horseback with "Syn dicate" Wilson and met the Albany ex cursion. Two thousand of Glouster's popula tion, a thousand from Albany and a hundred from the villages of Sunday Creek valley, filled the streets. There were "halleluiahsl" aud Shouts of hap piness, and after the churches were filled tbe evangelists talked to a vast crowd in the public square. At noon the band led tbe procession, and all the ministers in town walked just behind it. Next were 150 old sol diers of the cross some lame and all bent Still farther back were tbe ribbon wearing clubs and in tbe rear many hundreds in solid ranks. Choirs sang always happy songs, and the bund, ev ery member of which has joined the church, played only sacred music. Syndicate" Wilson says be is a rep resentative of a kingdom that wants emigrants from earth aud offers iudnce ments that cannot be duplicated an ev erlasting life, freedom from all pain and sorrow, eternal joy, a home in para dise. ' "Form a syndicate to secure an everlasting home in God's heaven 1" it his chief plea. Probably such scenes were never wit nessed before. This unique religious parade will, it is believed, destroy the evils of Sunday Creek valley aud give untold hundreds a home in heaven. New York Recorder. A BATTLE ABBEY. Bontheraen to Erect a alaaeau at the National Capital. At a meeting of Confederate veterans in Washington the other evening steps were taken toward securing the location of tbe Confederate Battle abbey at tbe national capital. Tbe proposed battle abbey will be on a colossal scale and will in all probabil ity involve an expenditure of t'50,000 or more. It is tbe wish of the Confed erate Veterans' association to secure its location in Washington, not only as a southern memorial building, but as one ot national importance and an especially attractive and ornamental feature of the city. The work of promoting the en deavor will be ably assisted by the La dies' Southern Relief society. Steps are being taken to organize a committee of SO, embracing members of the two associations and a number of prominent men and women outside of tbe associations. A committee, composed of one member from each state and one from tbe District of Colombia, was ap pointed at the last grand encampment of the United Veterans to decide upon the location of the memorial building, and this committee will do so at the coming annual encampment, to be held in Richmond in June next. ' Tbe committee of promotion in Wash ington, to be formed through the move ment inaugurated at the recent meeting, will solicit subscriptions, to be devoted toward the erection of the building if located in Washington. The general fund, collected through tbe southern camps, amounts already, it is said, to over $200,000. St. Louis Globe-Demo crat , . . IT GIVES POLICEMEN FITS. I learn from these that Baron Roent gen has always been a tireless experi menter, and finally (bis enemies say by mere chance) he learned one of the un discovered wonders of nature. Be is ad mired by scientists Of all countries, but to the uuscieutifio multitudes in tbe fa therland and elsewhere it seems inex plicable that we should be enabled to photograph in total darkness, aud that we should be able to photograph through walls of wood or solid and opaque bodies ia little sort of a miracle. Baron Roentgen was bora in 1845 in Zurich, Switzerland, and until his twen ty-fifth year studied in tbe Zurich uni versity, where be graduated and received his M. D. diploma. After a brief practice in Strasborg, he was appointed professor of chemistry in the Strasburg university. Since 1873 he has been professor at Hohenheim, Giessen and Wurzburg. It is said that he will devote all his energies in future to the perfection of his discovery.
