A Lively Club Mmtiro. Monday evening of thit week tbe republican olub meeting at War re a we a lively one, and great interact wa manifent by it member and th people of the neighborhood. It had been announced few day prevlou that Mr. Cleetoo and Mr. Allen would address the club on that evening, and a a reault the house wa well filled with suxlous listener. Tbe regular order of club business wa dupoeed of, concluding with a choice (election by th Warren quartette. At till juncture Dr. Cliff made tome well cboaen remark, altar which Mr. Allen wa introduced, and who occupied tbe floor for three-quar ter of an hour in an able address on the financial question. Mr. Cleelon then addressed the meeting for oearly an hour upon th tariff issue, and the meeting in every particular wa a de cided success. Other present from St. Helen were Charle Dlakesley, Wash Muckle and Dave Davis. Mr. Allan saog a couple of hi choice solos which were well received and vocifer ously applauded. Csples, of Portland, addressed tbe McKinley re publican club, of ibis city, and th people of thia community upon th political issue of day at th court - Louse Wednesday evening. In bis good-natured and able manner he proceeded to abow to public gsse the fallacies of the present demooratio ad ministration and the danger of popu list rule. He dwelt principally upon the tariff sanation, talcing tho history of th two old parties from tbe time of our forelalhera, and in no initano could be point out where a demooratio administration had proven anything! out a lauure. in aiscourse wa one that would awaken interest in the least carders, and hi remark at fast Interval won loud and merited ap plause. There were over 200 persons present, demonstrating tbe fact that the people of Columbia county are thoroughly awake to the interests of the country aud th welfare of their own county. Mr. Caples fired tbe first gun of tbe campaign ia this county, and on June 1st the report will ring out clearly and emphatically it result in an overwhelming majority, vibrat ing and re-echoing tbe tiding to the whole Union. Oregon will bold the first election in the United State this year, and aa Mr. Caples remarked, a the tiding of a republican victory are heralded from on state to another, th two opposing parties will hold tbeir breath and remark, "My Oot, va ish datf" Colombia county is awak to wage one of th hottest cam paigns vr conducted in th county, and her people sr Dent upon rolling up a republican victory that will sound th key not of republican success in the whole nation in November. That Wood Flumr. Thi city Is again the seat of agitation over a pro- nosed wood nume irom aiiiton oreea. Two gentlemen from Portland were here last week looking over th field, and it is reported they are eriouly considering such a proposition. We have been informed that the proposi tion is to build th flume from a point en Milton creek near tha Strachan plaoe, acros th flat and approach th city from the south ; that Milton ceek is to be dammed' at that place, and that the wood i to be floated in that a ream to the dam. The proposition U a feasible on, and no doubt, if th gmtlemen meet with no serious dim c ilty the flum will be built. Thi 1 n it an authorativa statement. We re poet only what ha been talked on the street. After the flum ha been built thaeity water front from Sheldon's butcher shop south to th extreme outh end of th Muckle wharf will be lined with one solid wharf, a It is sup. posed that all that room would be nec essary to handle th large amount of wood whioh the proposed flum will have a capacity to convey. Thia oity is on of the most aooessable point on th river for an extensive wood busi eets, and should thi scheme be put into successful operation all the tim ber tributary to Milton creek can be utilised, tbu furnishing employment to a great many now idle men, and affording opportunities for advance in labor at remuneration far above what ha been paid to choppers for several year. Thi wonld not only be of in calculable benefit to St, Helens but it would greatly stimulate the business and labor of the whole country tribu tary to us, and would do its important part in bringing prosperity to us again.
