It is now pretty deflnltely settled that the railroad and other commissions whose success ore the legislature (ailed to elect, will hold over for another two years, jit tornsyUenerel Idleman has delivered an opinion to the effect that they hold until their successors are elected and qualified. The ease may take a turn but it doesn't look that way at preeeut. HnaejaaaSherin Doan and Deputy Blakealsy are very busy these dsys collecting taxes and writing receipts therefor. So fsr the collections .have been good, even better than dur ing a corresponding period last year. Several heavy non-resident Ui payers have already liquidated their indebted ness lo the county and the sheriff la kept very busy writing letters and re ceiving, taxes. Tm Haw Law, Tbs new Butler law wblob was enacted by the late legislature provides that bsreeiter on filing a complaint in the circuit court thst the plaintiff roust pay the sum of o to the clerk, if toe amount involved le under $600 ; if over S500, the fee will be 10. The oofcool eUclioa in Portland Monday caused quite as much excitement as a 5 snsral election. Tbe candidates for irsctor were D. P. Thompson, who has held tbe position for ten years, and J. A. Strowbridge, the latter be ing a) eo led by a majority of 723 votes. Tbs city also voted upon the queHtion of free or toll bridges which resulted la fsvor of tree bridges by a majority of 1540. Tbey propose to raise tbe roof up tbe h eighth of one etory and msks a large hall. This can be done very cheaply, as it will require comparatively little extra lumber, white the same roof will cover two floors instead of one.
