MoBbim is ths first nativs Ore gon ian Bloc ted to the senate. He was 1m tha fin and only nativa-born ton to bold tbs office of secretary of state. Judge Bean, of the supreme oourt, ia alio a native Oregonian, bora in 1854t the Bam wear at Senator McBride, and In the aama oounty YamhilL Tn Arlington Beoord nan ia a gnat prophet. Ha undertakes to pre diet wbnt oonrae Senator McBride will panne during the entire six yean for which be is elected. We suggest that the state weatber bureau be dispensed with, and that people look to the Kec ord man for weatber indications, as well as all other things that are to take pises ia the future. Bkxatob McBbidb is the samesffe t)k George be has always been. Ex alting him to the highest position within that frift of the s tate has not change him in the least, and be is to day, as always, as ready to give ear to the humblest citixen as to the ariato c ratio millionaire. A man of the peo $W, it is no surprise that his election gives entire satisfaction to the people of the state. Senator Milchell pre sented Senator McBride's credentials the United States senate Saturday. Dallas Transcript. Slowly but most effectually does the mill of democracy grind, and not w very slowly either, for it has been but two years since that party grabbed the reins of this government, and have already succeeded in driving us clear out upon the billows of destitution. By another two yean, when that party has reached the toll gate of pergatory, and dismounted from the govern mental caravan, the ware of destruc tion will hare reached such propor tions that it will take many dsys for that party's successors to gnWe the long procession back upon the plain of prosperity end hope. It Beams strange thatfarmen do not pay mars attention to fruit raising, especially apples that will keep until spring. Apples are today retailing in Portland readily at 13.50 per box, and not the best quality ( either. At this season of the year apples always com mand a good price. There seems no good reason why Columbia county farmers are not prepared to stock the market at any time of the year with apples of the very best quality, and consequently receive a good price. Many farmers allow their fruit to go to waste or turn their bogs into the, or chard to harvest the crop. This may save labor but it is not a paying in vestment by a very long way. Tmb United Stales government is today confronted with serious inter national difficulties. A few days ago s 8 panish Warship fired upon an American stesmshipt which will make trouble between this country and Spain. The killing of Italians by a mob in Colorado, while the famous Mafia case at New Orleans in 1892 is still fresh ia the minds of the govern ment at Borne, will renew tbs bitter feeling between these two countries. This, together with the serious wound lot ol tbe British purser, Bain, at New Orleans recently, will, no doubt, give tbe United States government all it can handle through tbe diplomatic service for some time to come. How ever, this country has been very suc cessful in tbs past in averting serious international complications, and this ens, though looking dangerous at present, may be safely bridged over. CbATSKANltS, . X. S. Bryant spent a considerable portion of last week ia Portland. A. B. Hainea eraa at the nftunlv seat last week transacting business with tne court in session tbere. O. B. Hieffins hts been getting his bond in shape and is now school clerk for the coming school year. Wears pleased to note that Bor- quist, of Mist, is finding ready sale for bis Boats as fast as be oan get them out. . Charles Bouell spent two or three days in town shaking hands with ac quaintances made here during bis stay last summer. Hohbs, our photographer, is the champion fiahermau these days, being especially suceM in capturing carp with bis hook and line. It looks as though Kelly and Bhol- er's occupation was gone for the pres ent, and they will not be seen Hauling shingles from the hill for some time. Kormsn Merrill returned Friday evening from a visit to Portland and the county seat. He was present at the reception given tbs new senator in St, Helens. Mrs. Jack Campbell and children expect to leave this week for Wiscon in to visit her mother, whose serious illness caused tbs friends to send ior Mrs. Campbell. The city council held a meeting last Saturday evening, and as ons result, notices are posted informing our citi sens of the city election, to be held the Drat Monday in April. Rev. White moved into the new parsonage this week, though it is in rather unfinished condition as yet The reverend gentleman ia holding meetings at Mayger this week. - Our town would have been repre sented more largely at tbe reception to Senator McBride at St. Helens last week had notioe of it reached us a little sooner. We were pleased to bear tbe affair passed on so satisfactorily. Prank Merrill came over from bis mill Saturday to attend a council meetinc and close up his reports for tbe school district. Frank is a faith ful official, and believes that "what i worth doing at aU is wortb doing well. Last Friday svening the literary clnb went ont to the residence of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Conyers, where a very pleasant evening was spent in tbs study of Bret Harte, and ia a longer period of indulgence id musio and in a Keneral social evening. The ore tie tra was present and assisted musically to make tbe evening pass pleasantly, and all present declared tbey enjoyed themselves. Tbe next meeting is to be held at Fabriqae's, with Tennyson as tbe subject. On Tnesdav eveninK of last week the Seventh Dsv Adventists secured Conyers' halt and reviewed the ser mon of Rev. White on Sunday observ ance. Tbere was quite an audience present to bear the Saturday side ar gued. One correspondent, in writing of the effort, says: "The burden of proof wss with the Adventists, etc. Most listenen will sgree with that statement, as tbey could see and bear that tbe burden was a heavy one for them, and rather more than they could carry. A review of over two hours to reply to a forty minute discourse showed that the burien was with them. People who listened to both discourses can take their choice. What has excited more talk then the 8unday question this week wss the sudden disappearance of the mem ben of th shingle firm of Giggey A Company. Tbey were making shingles and shipping rapidly during the past month, seeming to be doing a paying business, but tbe various persons now showing up claims against tbe firm for labor and supplies, shows that the business hsa not been run at a profit, or if it was, that tbe profits were not distributed where tbey should have been. Tbe justice and constable were in demand for a couple of days issuing and serving legal papers to bold what could be found about tbe premises. That firm has bad a good many diffi culties to contend with, and it looks as though they had decided to abandon their enterprise and allow their cred itor! to divide what spoils they could secure. Unfortunately what is left will not go very far toward paying claims sgainst the firm. School Report. Report of school ending March IS. 1895, of district No. 2. Taxes Are Too Hlgth. Nsw Eaa, Or., March 8, 1895. KoitobsHut: 1 don't ask yon to pub lish this as sn advertisement for th sale of my land in Colombia county, hot I mast enter my protest against th manner and amount I am taxed in that oounty. 1 have a tract of wild land and I offered it for 82.50 per acre. A party offered to take one- fourth section at that price, and I think has backed out now. I think $990 is an abominable tax on land that is offered for sale at 8290 per acre. It is nearly robbery. I am willing to pay in proportion to what my land is worth, but $980, or eyen 8980 is pretty heavy on 310 acre that I offered for $2.60 per acre. I would not take today 160 seres of land in Columbia oounty as a pres ent and havs ta pay such abominable taxes. I am bound to stop paying taxes on bonded property. I shall sell, or give away, and top being robbed. I have a 60-acre Una I have worked fourteen hours a day tor ens year and havs not made enoufh off It to pay my taxes in Columbia count , I paid 82300 for this SO-scre farm. M. F. Moo as.
