"I was going home just at nightfall over a Bandy road when I noticed directly in front of me What appeared to bo a long line of preen ribbon about one-half an inch thick. J looped to examine it, and to my astou ishment found that it was a procession of anta marching three or four abreast In very close order, each one carrying a little pieoe of green leaf. The effect was continuous line of green without any break. I went back to find the begin ning, but as it issued from the grass at the roadside I was nnable to trace it ' farther inthat direction. I then follow :edit for several rods until it entered the grass on the other side and was lost to sight Whether it was Palm Sunday or St Patrick'e day with the anta or some political jubilee they were cele brating baa always remained a mystery ' to ma " St Louis Globe-Democrat The recent letter from the Judge of Awards on Baking Powders at the Chi cago World's" Fair exposing the falsity of the claims of a Chicago house that its , baking powder had received the highest " award lor strength, purity, excellence, etc., is a scathing rebuke to those manu facturers of inferior baking powders who have no regard for the truth, but habitu ally seek, in their public announce- menta todeceive consumers. -The Jadpe of Awards states that no such sward was aiven to the Chicasa concern, and ha? notified it tfeat it must cease publishing bis-Mme in connection with its false ' statements. World's Fair Officials Expoaa a Fra tander to an Award. . One of the odd results of the World's Fair is the claim now made to awards by some who were not even exhibitors. Of' facials of the exposition have not as yet taken final action in the matter, believ ing the quick wit of the people will de tect the spurious claims. Bnt to the case of a New York baking powder, that has been widely advertising an award, the attention of tbe Chief of Awards for Agriculture has been directed, lie brands the claim of this pretender as false, declaring " Neither the records oi this department nor the official catalogue ot tbe World's iMlumbian txnoeition show that this New York company was an exhibitor; consequently it could not receive an award at the World's fair.' Those who fairlv won their honors at the fair seem disposed to treat this irand as any other Iraod should be treat ed. They write. "Chicago, March a8th, 1894. We have purchased in the open market cans of Dr. Price's Cream Baking Powder and also of the other leading brands of baking powders, and have submitted them to chemical analysis. Arnold Pike tolls of a walrus hunt in Bird bay, to tbe north of Spitsbergen. Tbe bay was full of fast ice, but east ward the son was fairly open, and the hunter was rowing slowly hack to tbe sloop when the harpooncr suddenly laid aside his glass mid headed the boat for a black mass which the mirage magni fied into the size of a small bonse, but which was really a walrus. "Tbe walrus raises his bead, and we are motion loss," says Mr. Pike. "Ills intensely still, and the scraping of a piece of too along the boat seems like tbe roar of a railway train passing over head on some bridge. Down goes the head, and we glide forward again. The walrus Is uneasy. Again and again he raises his head and looks around with a quick niotiou, bat we have the sun right at our back, and be never notices us. At last we are within a few feet, and with a shout of 'Voelc op, gamlingt' (Wake np, old boy), wblcb breaks the stillness like a shot, the barpooner iaon bis foot, his weapon clasped in both hands above his bead. "As the walrus plnngos Into the sea the iron is hurled in his side, and with a qnick twist to prevent the head from slipping ont of tbe same slit that it has cot in the thick hide the handle is withdrawn and thrown into tbe boat No. t. who with a turn round the for ward thwart has been paying ont the line, now checks it, as stroke and the 'hammelmand,' facing forward, bang back on their oars to check tbe rush. Bumping and scraping the ice, we are towed along for about nve minutes ana then stop as the walrus comes to the surface to breathe, "In the old days the lance would fin isb tho business, bnt now it is tbe rifle, He ia facing the boat 1 sight for one of bis eyes and let him have both barrels without mncb effect apparently, ror away we rush for two or three minutes more, when he is np again, (till facing the boat He seems to care no more for tbe solid express bullets than if they were peas, but he is low this time, and as ho turns to dive exposes the fatal spot at the back of bis head and dies." Then put the bottles into a large kettle or othor metal receptacle. Pour cold water into the kuttlo until tbe water reaches the level of the milk in the bottles. Now close the month of each bottle with a plug of clean white cotton fiber. Heat the kettlo and contents to 165 de grees F. Then remove from the fire and cover tbe whole affair snugly with a woolen cloth to keep from cooling at once. Leave half an hour, then take out the bottles and keep them in running water or in any cool place, leaving them still stopped with tho ping of cotton. Tho flexible wooden stoppers used with some kinds of patent glass jars woold answer in plaoe of cotton, the object being to exclude air, dust and germs. Co careful not to heat above 16S degrees, or tho milk will not taste quite right In practice it will be fonnd a good idea to make easier the circulation of tbo hot water by placing a wire frame an inch or two in height in the kettle beneath the bottles. Milk carefully treated by tho above process may be warranted free from disease germs, and it will keep sweet about 24 hours. Many a milkman could get up a fancy trade at advanced prices on milk treated in this way. For ship ping milk long distance none of the methods, except by icing, has been yet sufficiently tested to be recommended Muwiachusctts Plonabiuan, - .. ... w .uk.il lha IiaI "HI, 11 a wan, wiu, a..-'. - - - loonlal, as he struck lha lair grounds with a W'siejuiug hihhi OH Tlie Ot'KAN.
