Wash ington dispatch dated December 19, Steies that Representative Hermann presented a bill urging that' a pension of $60 per mouth be granted to Hoses Brown, formerly of Lane county. The disputed further stated that owing to the old gentleman's xvrty and utter helplessness, the committee was so Impressed wiih the usines of the claim, that they reported Mr, Her menu's bill and allowed the sgd vet erau SOU tier month. Mr. Brown now in his 103d jear, and is the see oud ililr( survivor of the wsr of 1812 The one older is 100 years of age and resides in California. Mr. Brown re sides now al Grants Pass, but formerly lived on the Biuslaw, Line county. It has been suggested, saya the Eugene Guard, thai if I he Portland exiMwitiou w nu to add something thst will make its exhililiion worthy of attendance, they should secure air. Brown as an attraction. Living men who fouvhi. lor tneir country, bz yssrs ago, sre certainly scarce enough to be curios- itiee. ;. The MgAMtsTTMiir. Jacob George propiietor of the St. Helens hotel, was, iierhsps, the angriest msn in town last Sunday morning. Our readers will not be surprised at this when the story Is finished. Mr. George, on last Thanksgiving day, purchased three nne, young turk. ys, Intending tn stall, feed them lor Christmas. The feeding and laltening was adecessfully acrom pushed, the fowls being in splendid trim indeed a glance at that turkey pen almost msde one's mouth water. Hut, alas, when on last Sunday morn ing Mr. George went to feed his tur keys they were eonsplruons by their aiieenro. not even leaving a card to explain matters, tbe only evidence ol their unexpected departure being the large roller door of the harn banging by the lock. But, "alas, the birds I where are therf" Verily, the meanest thief is ho who; after tbe owner had taken so much eins to preiaire a Christmas feast, comes, under cover of darkness, and spirits it away, - Oasoox Potatos Lsid. On ex htbition at the rooms of the Oregon immigration board may be seen sev eral samples of the earlv n se poUtoes, These potatoes were raised in Morrow county, and are probably the largest of that variety over raised iu the slate, and for Morrow rounty to produce such mammoth xiaioe seems si most incredulous; yet thev were rsised up on the farm of Mr. B'wle, near Hepp- ner, and Mr. B iwlvs says they were growa without any irrigation. Thi sfieaks well for tlmt great wheat coun try, and snows that Uregou lands are raps hie of producing almost anything In the vegetable lion tinequaled by any other state in the union. What better advertisement does Oregon want than the numerous products which she has on exhibition through out the atatef 8hovu SriAT Moaa Some of the spptee coming to the Portland msrket are selling for 25 cents box, while others are selling as high as 11.60. There are very apparent rea sons for this, the principal of hh h is the worm and fungi to be found in the cheaier class. The business of "spray man" mentioned several months sgo by ihe Pacific Farmer has not been tsken np by anyone if the apples dis played iu the Portland market ia any criterion. There are hundreds of thousands of dolUrs lost to the farmers of the northwest thisyesr becsuselhey did not feel diHied to use a few hundred for purchasing spraying ma terial, and using it after it was bought. If Oregon wishes to rets in its repu tation for "Big Red Applea" it must do mora spraying for worms and fungi. Bb Wise It stands every one in hand to be very careful with them selves and what they possess. The country is flooded with destitute and penniless peopteind accounts of petty thievery hoMs a conspicuous placo in the news journals of the country. Peo ple sre resorting to desperate ends in order to get something to eat and wear, and those who are fortunate enough to have eiinVient clothing to keep them warm needs be very care ful how they use it. Articles of very litile importance or worth are bring; stolen everywhere, and there are many people who do nought but watch for a chance to get away with tittle arti cles of apparel. It behooves honorable and industrious people to be ever on the watch to guard themselves from such depredations . Too Much Comment. The big dail ies these days are "boiling over" with accounts of murders, suiuide, and the like ; all ol them giving the most min ute particulars. The newspspers of today are giving too much space to such matters. The comments always give sura niesns of killing. If such news were only noticed very briefly, and no particulars given, it is possible that such acta would become less pre valent. Such news always leaves a bal impression. Klsslns tor Revenste Only. A peculiar suit is pending in. New York sta'te. Miss Mneller gsve free kisses st a church festival f r the ben efit of the church. A fellow with money in his pou.ih attenl d, and he iilanked down his spondulics for a lea. He got it aud liked it, and kept on paying and kissing until his wallet was emptied. Thinking over the sweetness and satisfaction of this os culatoty Mrformance, he conelutlcd to marry Miss M. that he might get his kisses free of charge. He proponed and she consented, then he backed down and declared he would not hang his fortunes to a girl who would (lis pense her kisses so freely, even if it was for church purposes. And now there is a suit for damages. Of this sfTuir the Washington Post says; "At first the lady wept, refusing to be comforted, and after indulging her grief for a fortnight, she went to see a lawyer and her suit for bread) of promi-e Is now on a court docket. The cass of Mueller versus Corning promises to have an attractive and il luminating influence. One of the re mits of the trial may be a discourage ment of public and promiscuous kiss ing ss a means of raising money. Kis- ing for revenue only is not the ideal style of osculation. Anderson, and Henry Swearing were arrested on Sauvte's is land, nu warrants charging; them with the robbery of the store of Tidland Craw, at La Camas last Saturday night, and they were taken to Port laud, and locked up In the county jail, The warrants on which they were ap prehended were Issued from Justice Gicster's court, and were served by Deputy Sheriffs Charles A. Wheeler, and J. L. Wheeler, who returned at once with the prisoners. Immediately afier the robbery the La Camas con stable, accompanied by several deputy sheriffs, started iu pursuit of tbe . trio now in custody, who were suspected at once of the robbery. Cuming to Portland they called upon Chief of Police Miulo, who, upon being told of the facts in the case, Informed the Vancouver officers to call uion him for any assistance he might be able to render them, and how to proceed re garding the issusnce of warrants, in the event of the stolen giaids having been carried into this county and stale. The thieves were suspected of being in hiding on Sauvle's isl md, and were finally located, and arrests made ss here stated. When the robbery of their store was diih'overed by Tidland k Craw, three men who bad been camping above the town for ten days prior to the robbery, were suspected of the crime. Their camp was at once visited, win n it wss ascertained that they had taken their leave, and a fishing boat was also miss ing. The thieves carried awsy nearlv everthing of value in the store, except ing the counters, shelving, and srl s. Their booty consisted of tes, coffee, sugar, hams, baron, tobacco, shoes, rubliers, cutlery, clothing, all in large quantity, the aggregate value being twtween MUU and SOW. This they loaded into their boat sud were soon at a ssfe distance. Tuosday room i nr. on arriving noon be scene at Sauvies island, after wad ing through deep water and mud. Dep uty C. A. Wheeler tosU d himself at one door of Pomeroy's house and J. L. Wheeler at the other. Pomcroy, when swakoned by the sheriffs and told to come out, instead, set his dogs upon the offli-ers. They beat off the cautnes, . and Anally considering thst there waa no help for it, Pomeioy opened the door and trsve himself no romeroy is a mils rancher and Ande son aud Swearing are fishermen. The tatter two were arrested without soy trouble. Tbe prisoners were tsken to Portland aud Swearing and Ander son were held simply as witnesses. The offii-ers msde a second trip to the island Tuesday afternoon, and up on making; an examination of P imer oy's house they discovered all the stolen property. Everything to be found in a general merchandise store was found in quantity in Pomeroy's house. From all appearances the officers are led to bliee that a regularly or ganized band of thieves have been op erating In that section fr a long time past, and made f omemy'e house their headquarters to conceal their booty. PREFERRED PliUJM. Some of tbe Appointments to be Made by Governor Lord. A great many ret dera of the daily press of Oregon are said to be just now directly interested in tbe appointments I within the gift of Governor Lord after he takes his seat as chief executive, and doubtless the remainder will be interested in knowing just bow many such epKintmente lbereare and their character, so the Statesman has been digging them up and will here present tbein. Health officers at Yaqtiina bay, As toria, 8iulaw and Coos bay. The clerk of the board of school lsnd commissioners. The management of the portage railway. The commission for the construction of the Eastern Oregon insane asylum. The capitul building commission. Ths domestic animal commission. It might be well to remark, for the purpose of saving postage, and tlso saving the new governor from a deluge of mail matter, that a great many of thess places will be filled only as va cancies ocour by limitation of terms, or through other causes, so the sp pointments following upon the change of administration will be very few. , - Every dog kept on a farm should be useful for some purpose.
