They bad a big lot o( answers U peruse ibis time and quite a num. per of them were most ridiculous. For netanoe, on the subject of modern history such responses were given to questions as follows i Q. Name three forme of government that existed among tbe colonies prior to the revo lution ; A. French, English and Span, tan. Q. Whut caused the civil wr; A. Annexation without representation. Q. Name two American poet; A. Shakespeare and Byron. The Pequot and Sioux wars were given as smong the baltlea of the French and Indian war. Tennyson and Burns were named as prominent American states men. The art of printing was named aa an important American invention. One ol tbe answers to the question "what and where is Lima," (retrring to the capital of Peru) was that "it was a large bird found In the Andes mount ains." Out of a possible 100 one paper in modern history received 9 per cent. A Glorious OoumtryzA Newport, Oregon, letter to Coleman's Kursl World, oontains the following: "As I have spent one of the wettest winters and one ol the dryeat summers that tbey have ever had (so they say), now, if so, it certainly ia the finest climate on earth, and right here ia one of the moet charming spots to pass the time winter or summer. The mutton of these bills ia the best in the world. All thia region needs to mske it the gar den spot on earth la population, and when our railways begin to carry pas sengers at the aame rale aa freignt, whlob they should be compelled to do, all will be well. Why nott Almost three-fourths of their net profits are on freight. If tbey were to carry us as freight It would add another three fourths to their net profits. Remem ber that some sii-seventha of us never travel on account of high obarges.and tbe other seventh go as little as possible." DisRATiarAOTioar. Tbe patron of school district No. 24, Nehslem, are not doing much to advanoe the work of education. Word come to ua that not on pupil residing in the district attends school; that the five pupils who attend all come from the adjoin lug district. The reason for this is aid to be lack of harmony among the patron. If they will read up on tba school law tbey will readily aee tbeir error, aa the law requires that children nnder fourteen years ol age snail at tend school at least twelve weeks dur ing each school year, unless prevented by sickness.
