At considerable inquiry is mnde bout the iiniiis law we give it, us handed u-t by a friend, uud suggest that it be clipped for instant use, and that the law he rigidly enforced: Hook agHtili muy he killed from August 1, to October I; spring poets from March j, to Jul ' 1, sranuiu-mongon Fiom l cember 1, to January J, exclusively, umbrella borrowers from February I, to May 1. Open season till the year on life insurance agents, picture pod dlort and mossbacks. There Is no habit so ensy to fall into nor one so hard to break as that of borrowing. It is so simple to any "will you lend roe;" but when the time comes to pay back the loan you are al most sure to begrudge and murmur something uuout "paying for a dead horse," forgetting how much yu ap predated the kindness shown you the timo you hesitatingly whispered "will you lend." Tho woman who borrows sugar, tea and spice becomes a nuisance that her neighbors soou ub nor. The woman who wishes to wear your hula, your Jewelry und your eveu ing shoes you soon learn lo dretid, and n fact the chronic borrower is a person wnom all sooner or later learn to avoid Do not borrow unless it Is an absolute necesNity, in which case be certain to imy back the loan promptly when you said you would. It is much better to do without things than to no in debt for the loveliest dress, hat or wrap will not compensate for tho heavy load of debt that presses on your heart, and which blots out tho brightness of tho sunshine and looms up before your eyes wherever you go. lo live within one's income Is the secret of prosperity Jlappiness is the heritage of the one who adheres to this rule, and a con tented mind and un ever-iucreusing bank account will belong to the one who buys only what he can pay for. sud has no wakeful niirhla worry ing over a debt that in nit bo paid, but for which there Is no money Iu wait' ing. Fortunately the man was so com pie My tangled iu the net that he was held firmly in one place and carried around with it and thus escaped being dashed to peices by the paddles. The engines were soon stopped and the un furiuuata fellow released from hi dan gerous position completely exhausted and badly hurt about the arms and legs. The wheel made about forty revolutions while he was in it. Tho boat was smashed into kindling wood. Mr. Otis P. Akin, of Portland, has re turned from Lake Merrill, near Mount Ht. Seven counties of Oregon liave paid nil the state taxes they owe and stand square on the state treasure's books, so says the Salem Statesman. These are Columbia, Coos, Josephine, Marion, Morrow, Walowa, and Yamhill. There is the small sum of $8.30 standing ngiiinst Million, but there is much doubt about tha county's liability in the matter and ns it has been stand ing for ten or fifteen years it scarcely tickings in tho list of current obhgie nous, i no oilier counties ot tne state have paid more or less of the amount due the stale, some of them havinu only small balanoesyct to remit. Clack amas county, winch made tin its lew before the state determined the amount of the state levy, and allowed only rive mills on a dollar while it should have been seven nulls, has paid up all it owes fortius year, leaving its county fund about 110,000 short, but some $4,000 back on last years tax still siunns against mac county, lliat is on the dispute about the legality of raising the mortage valuation and it will be determined bg the suit of Mult nomah ootuity for that purpose.
