AltlwHtgh Memorial day is not prop erly ft day of recreation, the excursion A lady from the graitshopper slate bud occasion to pass St. Helens on one of tho river steamers while "doing" the const, and among other things which attracted bor attention was the sign on tho front of Thm Mist onioe. The lady dad been in the Hate long enough to luarn the meuiilng of the local pliraae "Orfgou mist," but could not uudoretnud why a business home should have such a sign over its door. Turning to her friend, the lady akd : "What does it mean? Is it possible they boltlu this mist and sell lit" J lor Mil ml was ss much miat)lncd ss her ulf at ths strange sign, and not wish ing to talc any questions, limy went on their wsy in blissful ignorance of the fact that linns, though misleading, are some times appropriate. The spsoloui residence of Mr. and Mrs. J. Muokle was tho acone of a very agreeable whist party last Monday evening, which whs attended by Mrs. J. George, Mrs. Huberts, the Misses Willie and Dull Cuples, from Columbia Oily, Alice Cox.Tillie Muokle, Emma Cox. Mossrs. Charles Mucklo, Wash. Muokle, K. Koss, Dr. Qrlswold, Clue. Davis, A. King, T. J. Egsn, Paul Ohsndler, Thoa. Mucklo and I). Davis. The hlgheit number of points made during the seventeen hand played were thirty-one, by Miss Alice Cox and her partner, while Mies Josie U roves and 1'aul Chandler were the proud recip ients of the booby prize a penny each. A plentiful lunch was served after which the hitter part of theevening was pent in chat and music. The probabilities ot Astoria sec urine a railroad this year seemingly become fewer daily. For some time there bas not been any mention of the fact given out, though when questions are aeked Hie same storeotypeu, regulation assur ances are made. To be surs, the meterolugiral conditions have been suuli aa to diaeourage almost any at tempt at such sn enterprise yet, if one is to draw conclusions from the work ings ot the promoters, tbe chances are, by no means, too flatteringly brilliant. To bo sure, railroads are not built in s few days, but it would snom that if there was to be any very great amount of activity this summer, some move would be made, aa toe season is aa vaucing quite rapidly. Ia towns and villages where are not to be found all the couvemeocics winch people of modern times aie so prone to look for, there sometimes arise many little dissatisfactions brought about bv the lack of enterprise. One thing which is so mucn desia-u oy peo- u u. esnoc a ly transient, is a neat ana clean bath, and which many small olaces. and even large ones, sre devoid ol. but in tills rosuect t. Helens is well ud w Hi the times. At sir. uoi burn's csn be had a first-class shave snd hair-cut, and the roost pleasing to all. ia the knowlodge tbat one can pro cure a bath, with ail tne modern con vuinenciea, for the small sum ol twenty five cents. Michael Fitrgerald, an old renidoot if H.'ftnixM)D. died last Saturday at St. Vincent's hospital. In Portlund, of a combination Of diseases, inougu Mr. Fitxgerold bad resided on Scap- pooee sevial years, little wss knowu of hi" antecedents, lie lived alone on hia farm and was considered some what eccentric. He was reticent and unapproachable and never spoke ot his early life, a fact which led all to believe him a confirmed bachelor, but siuce his dfath it transpires tbat he hsd formerly been married, snd bas a son and dsughter, the latter being a sister of charity, in New York. Judging from the tenor of sn article in a recent number of au Astoria paper, ih nnnnln there are bent upon having a railroad. It says: "There is consider able talk of circulation a petition among the business men and all outers inter ested asking the amount of five dollars tier week to be subscrioeu, ana u !;,... ..i u, i 10.000 a month ran be "Let" There be Light." Tho important question of whether ornotwesre to have electric lights should be decided at once snd duciucd hi favor ot the lights. We cannot af ford to do without so valuable sn im provement to this plaoe. The spirit of enterprise, public improvement and advancement is now in tho ssoendancy mill we should not balk its progress for the sake of a few dollars. An agent lor an ehictrio light company will be hero within the next fow dys to con fer with our citizens snd the city au thorities in regard to this m alter and it is to be hoped he will be eiven as- surnnce of the necessary support to in sure the sucess of this valuable edition to our many other public improve ments. No similar investment will bring this city the large returns which will be realized by introducing these lights. Thoy will not only prove to be a great and badly needed public con venience but will go farther towsrds auccuasfollv advertising the olace and -v, - , bringing prominently before me pumio than any investment the city can pos sibly make. Added to our splondid system of water works, convenient snd reliablo banking bouse and tine new theater, electrio lights will give us au advertisement that we cannot afford to do wilout just at present. We ask the citizens of this Iilaco to consider this matter seriously and candidly, and we are convinced if you take an unbiased view of it trom a business standpoint you will not hesitate to see and admit! the benollts to be derived irom a goou system of electrio lights.
