Conyer went up to .the county seat the first of the week. Will Deeds and wife came in from Nehalem Tuesday evening on their way to Portland where Will expect to resume the steamboat business with another line of steamer. Mrs. F. L. The lumber firm of Bryant A Con way ha dissolved, it ia reported, Mr. Conway retiring. E. S. Bryant will carry on the business at the old stand. Bilvo Graham locked very much like a military man in hia blue suit on our streets last Monday. He is home on ft vacation from Corvallis, and rode up from Marshland with bis sister. The benefit dance for securing addi tional seat for Ihe school rooms came off last Friday evening. The vacant upper story was cleaned up for the oc casion and made an excellent hall for dancing. The good ladies of tho vil lage cheerfully contributed tho mater ials for the supper, so that the eutire receipt might be devotod to their in tended purpose. Tho crowd wa not so large as on some occasions but the enjoyment seemed no less general, whilo the room was not crowded un pleasantly in consequence. There was a uniform expression of satisfaction at the evening's exercises, and tho finan cial result was sufficient to pay for the seats required. George Washington was not the oulj boy born on the 22d of February. The editor of the Chief knows of another one. Brown came down from the Portland University Saturday and preached at three appointments for Rev. F. L. Moore, who is absent from his work hero assisting a brother miu istcr in the valley. Rev. Brown was warmly greetod by his old friends of lust summer, and preached a very earnest sermon here on Sabbath eve ning. An epidemic of whooping cough is diminishing the at tendance somewhat, which is unfortu nate, but will be overcome in time. A meeting is called at the Hudson schoolhouse Saturday, March 4, at 10 A. M., for the purpose of organizing a cemetery association and to elect trus tee for tame. It is also proposed to erect a building at the cemetery lor church purpose if asufficient amount of money and work can be raised. This is an enterprise worthy the atten tion of every citizen in this vicinity, and all should attend the meeting and assist iu the good work. Aimer Mcserve returned to school at Oregon City lust Monday. Mr. G, W. Richardson has bought twenty acres ot laud at Muyger, and expect to move there some time in the future. Mrs. Sarah Mcserve haa been quite ill tho past week, though she is much improved in health at this time. Mis Ida Morgan ia taking lesson in painting. She will no doubt do well in this, one of the best of accom plishments. Rev. Moore will hold divine services in Dolena hall on Sunday, March 12, at 2 P. M. It is hoped all who can will be present. . Mr. A. B. Little is preparing to move his family to Houlton thi week, A move i being made to plank the road in (rout of Mcserve Bro.'s mill. This i something that should by all means be done, as it is the main road leading to Rainier and Downing' landing, and can be easily done if each will put hi (boulder to the wheel. Thi piece of road is always almost im passable during the winter and spring months, and with what road work could be put on it, together with a little volunteer work, it could be put in above high water. The masquerade ball last week was a success, uver nity couple were masked. Road working season will soon be at hand.
