Comiurh, A gentleman was heard to remark a few days ago, while paasinif Columbia county's court house : "I this the barn that i run in connection with the St. Helena hotel?" Upon being (old the facts in the case his embarrassment would hardly permit him to apologize for the frank inquiry. My pricos will continue to be as low or the market will permit, in all lines of general merchandise. I will at all time nuet every "cut." Euflpectfully, W. H. Doi.man. The following are the Sovereign Grand Lodge officer elected by the Odd Fellows' convention in Portland Tuesday: Grand Sire, C. T. Campbell, Loudon, Ontario, Canada; Deputy Grand Sire, J. W. All were more or loss hurt, but Jimmie is badly injured. Journal. A short time ago a dispatch from HilUboro to the Orcgonian stated that Waller Pomeroy, in company with others, had been arrested, charged with stealing wheat. , We wish to say that the statement was iuoorrect. The writer was in HilUboro on the day of the arrests and made dilligent inquiry in the presises. The names of the parties arrested was Pomeroy, but Waller was not with them, in fact he was at hi home on Boappoose at the time. The St. Hellen Odd Fellows 26 altogether went to Portland Monday to take part in the Sovereign Grand Lode parade on that day. Those who mtondedNMite! Ws W. Blakesley, U. W. Clark, 0. fc-Colburn, A. Some of the boys came home Monday night on the Pot ter, while the remaindor stayed over and "took in" the town, returning on the Kellogg Tuesday. The date of the World's Fair ente) tain moot to be hold at Delena has been changed from Oct. 1 to Oct. 8, Wo understand this change was made necessary from the fact that those who seem 4o bo vested with authority have refused to permit tho use of the school house for the occasion. It is said that politics is behind the refusal, but we trust this is untrue. If it is true, and there whs no valid reason otherwise, these worthies must be endowed with a very small modicum of that publio spirit which should be a leading char aoteristioof every true publio spirited and progressive citizen. They might well seek a clime where the traits of civilization are unknown and moss- biiclii m prevail. However, those having the entertainment in charge seem to be equal to the emergency, as we are informed that Meserve Bros. will at once commence the erection of a hall, which will be completed by Oct 8, and the entertainment held therein, The people of Delena and vicinity are preparing an entertainment, which will take place on Saturday evening, Oct. 8, 1802, for thebonoflt and to aid in preparing Bjf appropriate dis play from Columbia county to the World' Fair. Alor the concert thosi who desire can enjoy themselves by dancing. We trust that all who can find it convenient will be present and assist this worthy movement finan cially. The people down in that end of the county seem to be thoroughly alive to the county' best interests, and deserve credit for their publio spirited ness in this movement. The steamer Wilmington was again held at Astoria last Sunday, and on an inspection by Collector Taylor, about 400 pound of opium was discovered. As usual, the captain denied all knowl edge of the drug being on board. It seems that every time this vessel en ters the Columbia she is found guilty of this smuggling business. It might be as well for tiie treasury department to dispense with hor service as a com mon carrier altogether. Ten immonee logs, the largest ever cut in the toresl near Tacoma, were taken from the Port Blakeley mill last week and shipped to Chicago to go into tho Washington world' fair build ing. Each log ia 122 feet long and 42 inches across at the small end. Every two logs require seven cars, thirty-five cars in all being required for ten logs. One hundred and twenty-six logs will lie required for the foundation of the Washington building. The 21st day of Octobor ha been designated by the president as Colum bus Day, to be celebrated by all the schools of tho country in honor of the four hundredth anniversary of the discovery of America. We trust the schools of Columbia county will make arrangements for the proper celebra tion of the day. The Portland Exposition opened Wednesday night, with about 10,000 people present. PURE FOOD IN CONUHKSS. Action Which Haa Ron u I led In the Official Determination of the Bent Baking Powder. The act of congress authorizing the examination of the baking powders has resulted in a most unprecedented compliment to the Royal Baking Pow der, The tests were made in the Gov ernment Laberatory at Washington, and tho olfioiul report shows that the Koyal is superior to all others in leav ening strength being over thirty per cent, above the avorage. The report also shows the purity of the Boyal Powder and the wholcsomeness oi its ingredients. This is probably the highest compli ment of an official character ever paid to a prietury article, though no more Limit the great army of baking powder consumers would expect iu behalf of their old friend and favorite. The result of the official examina tion, as thus determined, will, of course, make the "Royal" the standard for Government purchases. GILLTON. Mrs. E. II. Flagg and children start ed for their home in Salem last Tues day, They have been visiting Mrs. Flagg's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Becgle during the summer. Woodhauling is nearly finished in this locality aud a good shower would be a benefit to tho pastures. There are about 6000 cords of wood at Ful lei ton'a lauding, which means an earn ing of over $10,000 for this neighbor hood. The roads are badly cut up and some work should be done on them before the wiuter ruins set In. There was a pleasant party and candy pull at the residence of Henry Duncan last Friday night. It was given iu honor of Miss Josie Duncan and Ida Van Noose, of Newberg. The attendance was large and all had a good time. It is reported that Wil liam Daggort lost his way home, but did not have his girl with him. ' !.: 11 I t v. lotatoes una year are biiiuh huu lew in the hill. The best patch in this neighborhood was raised by Mr. Holoe. Tbe equinnoctial days have arrived and the smoke will soon be a thing of the past. Miss Zoe Semple, who has been vis iting her mother, Mrs. Hoyt, started for her home in Tacoma last Sunday. Bev. Beauchamp, of the Evangelical church, will hold service at the school house next Sunday evening. It is hoped there will be a large attendance. Thompson, the man whose disap pearanoe last March caused so much anxiety in this neighborhood, returned last Monday, and reported that he had boon at work in Salem. His eccentric conduct is hardly excusable if the man i iu his right mind. Mis Eva Becgle is visiting her cousin, Miss Cloe Searcy, this week, Amos Slavens, who is convalescing from typhoid fever, was brought home last Saturday. Hi improvement is a source of congratulation. CAIilCO VALLEY. Roads dry and dusty. There was a dance at Jesse Hen dricks' last night. Mrs. Hendricks was sick a-bed, so she could not take part in the dao.ee. Mrs. Howard is working for Mrs. Scott, of St. Helens. The crops are in need of rain. D. H. Pope attended" the Odd Fel lows' gathering at Portland this week. Floyd Fowler moved to Columbia City last Thursday. John Smith spent Sunday at B. F. Pope'. A. A. Smith and wife went to the county sent yesterday. The Sabbath school is still progress ing. Carico Spy. The demand for Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy is steadily growing, from the rict that all who give it a trial are pleased with the result and recommend it to their neighbor. We feel sure that the rem edy cannot be recommended too high ly. Wagley & Hmead, druggists, Uew tou, Iowa. For sale by Edwin Boss. Jury List October Term. As tbe light of medical science spreads among an intelligent people, scattering the dark shadows of ignor ance aud superstition, and dispelling the gloomy pessimism which ha dis couraged the progress of the human race through all tho past, physicians have almost with universal accoid de cided that electricity, properly applied, is the greatest factor in curing disease. Not one out of a hundred, however, know how to use it. To be used effi caciously, much time and study is re quired. Dr. Darrin haa made it a life long study, as the wonderful cures he gives to tiie publio daily will justify tho statement. Most of hi cures are performed with this subtle agency, as the following card will show : To the Public This "is to testify that I have been deaf in both ears for a long time, also great pains in my head and ringing in my ears.
