THE OREGON MIST. SCfWCRlPTiOX, 1.60 VB YEAR. St. Hclbn. March 18, 1892. ths Astoria railroad. Astoria ban at last some hope of tu tu ring raliroad, not ail imaginary - line, but a real railroad. A contract lioa bwu signed by C. W. Schofield a iid Owirt'e Gosi to build the road, which will run through the Nehalera alley, probably along the roaUJ Of the bid Astoria 4 South Coast urvey. Ac rorditig to the contract, Messrs 8chr field and G.a will receive $300,000 cosh when the road is completed and accepted bj the trustee, and other Coiinideratioiie, such right-of-way and grounds for terminal facilities to the value of f 200,000. The $300,000 will he raised by a itock company, which will buy up the 800 acres land sulwidy. The land subsidy was offered t j Mr. Schofu ld if he would construct the road, but he declined, and sug gested this method of raising the money, it la said inat actual con struction has already been commenced, and a corps of surveyors are now in the field at work. Mr. Schofield says the road will connect with the Bouthern Pari lie kt some point on the Una at or near Hillaboro. The contractors have agreed to build the road within two yean. A road through the Nelialem valley has" long been needed, and no that a fair proposition has been accepted for the construction of the same, we sin cerely hope that the land owner along the proposed route will not assume that they have a "snap-judgment" on the situation and want ten time more for the right-of-way than their whole possessions are worth. This is too commonly the case in such matters, which, in fart, only react to the entire disadvantage of those persons. Aa to the present status of things, without a railroad theNehalera valley has little hope of any great degree of prosperity, and by thus placing the value so ex orbitantly high npon their property they simply retard their own prospects. True, a railroad usually builds Where there is business sufficient to justify. . But when we consider the namerous strings pulling against a railroad to Astoria, the great expense of building through this particular locality, and the number of propositions that have already failed as regards Astoria rail road building, we are led to believe that even the present bright prospects may be long delayed by the land owners placing a too high a valuation upon the right-of-way. Again, We will say that our prefer ence would be to nave a road con- will probably be the nominee for com' minsioner, aud for representative, Marl In White, oIMayger, and Norman Merrill, of Clatekanie, have been favor ably mentioned. But by the time the convention meets several new caiidt' iates lor the last named utnee may "bob, up serenely" and. change the whole situation materially, Fo'r these two offices it is very important iust at this time to put forward the very beat men in tne county. There is im portant work to be done and we want men who have got snap aud rustle for these places, otherwise it is tolly to males the norrtirutfotf. Next Thursday is the day set for the meeting of the republican county convention. On that day a complete set of nominations for county offices will be made. Delegates to the state convention will be seleoted at that time. In making tire nominations for tne Various offices there should be but one point considered in this matter, and that is whether not the aspirant is capable of intelligently discharging the duties of the office or not. We have plenty of men who are compe tent to Handle the auuirs of the conntv and the names of such metf only, snouid oe entertained by the conveo tion on next Thursday. We can not help being greatly benefited no matter which route it takes. AMONG TBS USDIDATSS, . TOR ASSESSOR. In the midst of the great scramble for the nomination for clerk and sheriff the people seem to have quite forgotten that there will be any other vacancies to fill at the coming elec tion. One of the most important of fices in the county has been almost entirely overlooked. No one seems to want to be assessor, and without the services of which the rest of the officers would be poorly compensated. In this , connection the name of Mr. George .Myger has been spoked-favorably af by a number of our best citizens, and we have no doubt as to his qualifica tions to fill the office. In our opinion the republican convention could not make a better choice than Mr. George ifayger for assessor. TOR 8HERIEF. There are a number of aspirants for the nomination for sheriff this time. Among those most promi nently mentioned, so far as we have been able to learn, are C. W. Blakealey, J. H. Bwager, 8. Saulser and Ed. CopeUnd. All of these gentlemen, we believe to be thoroughly competent to nil the omce, and at tbia time it is hard to draw any conclusion as to which One has developed the most strength, wtiiie au appear to be con fident of success. W. Miller is acain on foot after a month's illness. F. Fowler and wife Went to the city on Sunday. A. A. Smith has moved on his ranch on Milton creek. The road KnH the Sfiltnn mb twtttnm is in a very bad condition. We understand the old shingle mill has started up again, rnn by Bailey and Emer son. R- ft- Bailey arrived home yesterday from the Wood bard nursery, where he has been selecting ft large lot of fruit trees for the people in this part of the country. Mrs. E. C. Moyer came near getting seriously hnrt by a horse running away with her and throwing her. It happened that she alighted where the mud waa soft and no bones were broken. TIDE CREEK. Of conTse there is to be but one clerk elected, and indeed the one who comes out victorious against such odds must think himself extremely fortunate. Switzer and E. M. Wharton. The contest for the nomination u a hotly contested one to say the least, and conclusions can only be drawn when the convention have voted and elected the candidate. The respective strength of several of them seems to be very nearly equal and it will undoubtedly take a number of ballots for the con vention to decide. , For COtJKTT itJDOg. , For this office we have as yet heard of but four aspirants, W. W. West, of Scappoose, T. C. Watts and B. Gox, of Bt, Helens, and G. W. Barnes, of Mayger.
