Eugene, l'.lakesley nnd Frank Georgo were Rainier vis itors last Saturday. Mis Florence George came down from Portland Tuesday evening to spend n week visiting relatives. Martin White made a trip to Quin cy last Sunday, returning in the ev ening accompanied by his mother-in law, Mrs. Llllich, nnd her daughter, who had been visiting relatives at that place for a couple of weeks. It is suggested that for the Infor mation of transient wheelmen tho city authorities should indicate, by clear ly painted signs or other means, that cvclists are strictly forbidden from riding on the walks. In the absence of any sign of warning scarcely a day passes but wheelmen are seen speed ing over forbidden territory. Now that we have the horseless carriage, we await Impatiently for the coming of the horseless laugh. just far enough to catch come unwary pedestrian whose thoughts are soar ing above the common plane of side walks. Attorney W. 11. PlUnrU. well known to the people of Columbia county, returned to St. Helens last Saturday after an r-bsence of several years. He spent some timo In Virginia, after which he came to southern Califor nia, but said he found no place he liked so well as old Webfoot. Mr. IMIlard talks of permanently locating hero and continuing the pracitce of law. Accompanying him is Mr. Good shire, an attorney of California. Oregon's sawmills cut two and two thirds billion board feet of lumber in 1818. With proper protection, log ging, and restocking, these forests will provide for tho lumber Industry twice this amount orever but fire must be kept out. Twenty-Five Years Ago (From the Files of The Oregon Mist August 9. 1895.) I Tho oldest inhabitant has never i seen hotter weather than has pre-1 vailed for the past few days. I It Is a hard matter to revive tho j creamery question in any district with butter about 12 cents a pound, which would put milk below any pos siblo living price, probably at about 35 cents per hundred or about 2i , cents 3 gallon. Parties coming in from Nehalem bring reports of terrifie forest fires In the upper Milton creek and Bunk-, er Hill sections. It Is said to be al- most impossible to get over that route even on horseback. The fire Is doing great damage to timber and will no doubt totally destroy largo bodies which would have soma day been brought into market. The small ranches in "that locality, of which there are not a few, will of course be losers to some extent. I ; Twenty-Eight Years Ago (From the Files of The Oregon Mist August 5. 1892.) i The county court could do a good : act by offering a bounty on the scalps I of grey squirrels, as they are very j destructive to grain crops. M. Saxon says that they have destroyed abou. one-fourth of his grain this season, and many others make the same com plaint. The regular customary growl about sidewalks is being heard in St. Hel ens, and wealon't wonder at it.
