Twenty-Five Years Ago (From the Files of The Oregon Mist August 2, 1S95.) Edgar Muckle and his spotted pony came up from Haintor Wednesday. W. A. Harris Is now occupying the Wikstrom house on Honesty hilt, recently vacated by W. J. Rice. Mrs. Judson Weed :ind children left Tuesday for Lexington, Wish., to spend a short time with relatives. The Knights of Pyth'.as lodges of St. Helens, Rainier and Kalama con template giving an excursion to the seaside some time in the near future. and negotiations are now pending for the charter of a suitable stetmer for the occasion. Mr. Price and Mr. Watts and wITo of Scappooso, and Mrs. N. A. Perry of Houlton. were in this place Satur day to see Mrs. Watts' daughter, Miss Marie, who has been teaching the summer school at this place. Yank ton Notes. : Twenty-Eight Years Ago (From the Files of The Oregon Mist July 29, 1892.) James Muckle t tils week con structed a floating bridge :-nd float ed It down t-re river to Deer Island where I': will span Deer Island slough connecting the main land with the island. ' The Odd Fellows will hold their first regular meeting In their new hall tomorrow (Saturday) evening. All those desiring to become charter taembers should be present. Goble was treated to some excite ment on Saturday last. In a stae of drunkenness William Burdlck came near shooting A. Nevln in the latter's saloon. Burdlck had been tending bar for Nevin for some time, and on Saturday night was making preparations to go hunting on the Sunday following. He had procured a shotgun and about 10 o'clock he was In the saloon with a number of other men, and for some reason or other, perhaps best known to him self,' he begun to flourish the weapon around the room. Some bystander, becoming uneasy lest he should do Borne damage, caught the gun, where upon Burdick pulled the trigger, the ball passing close to Mr. Nevin and entering the wall. He was arrested and placed under guard. Sunday night the guard felr asleep and dur ing the sntning that followed the prisoner awakened. He at once made his way .through the back door, which was not locked, and disappeared in the darkness. Within the last ten yenr.s the For est service has brought about the sale of 4 20,000.000 feet ot timber iu the national forests of Alaska, for piling, sawlogs, and shingle Dolls. The commercial trees of Alaskk are western hemlock, Sitka spruce, Alaska cedar, and western red cedar. Cottonwood, birch, lodgepole pine, and white fir are also found iu small quantities. A log raft containing over 6.000. 000 feet of timber has been seut out ot the Columbia river by the Benson Timber company, and Is now on the high seas being towed to San Diego, where it will be sawed into lumber. A tomato yield two pounds to the square foot has been produced undar glass In the agricultural col lege. Two greenhouses 20 by III) feet In size have alreidy yielded 1200 pounds of tomattes and are expected to give 2500 pounds by tin eud of the season. Shearar, Ore. The falls of tlir Deschutes river near here, which hav been the site of nothing hut a toll bridge and a white-elephant hotel foi the past 30 years, are to be harness ed soon by the Eastern Oregon Land Company. Enormous potential elec tric energy is now going to waste. It will probably take more than a San Francisco earthquake and fire to nominate a man who can beat Harding. Shoe Retailer.
