ST. HELENS MIST. FRIDAY. FEBRUARY 22. 1918 6 LETTER FROM SUNNY FRANCE To the St. Helens Mist: Have at last arrived In this sunny land of France. Can certainly say it does not measure up to expecta tions, but it surprised some of us at that. We were brought to our present location in dirty little rail-1 lnterosting news as to how Uncle road cars which have the following ( gnm.g ar northern territory has re inscription on the outside, "Homines , spouded t0 the aallon-a can. Th let 40. chevaux 8," which means forty ;ter m part BUie&. men or eight horses. So you can see ; ..Eighty per cent of the white that their transportation facilities for ; populaton o( Alaska are members of soldiers are real ciassy. roads are a disgrace to a civilized na tion. Many of the engines would not be allowed on a logging road In America. They have a shrieking lit tle whistle which was amusing to some of us at first. The village near which we live Is numDer being so large that the se situated on the Bite of an old Homan iective draft is not to be enforced village and is about one thousand nere at ioast for months to come, years old. All the peasants' houses j ..Iu Ketchikan we have over 2,000 are built or stone, tinu cuuiumo uuuac, barn and chicken coops, to you see about what It's like. Canuo tety pur location but needless to say if we went much further Kaiser Bill might have a few words to gay. The people are rapidly Earning tne lnis WDr room wni be seen 1 sew art of being patriotic. They haag MP 8 machines run by electr'.cUy, and Old Glory In front of their shop, golllg ut OJ10 timo. All of the drape the American and French flags kniuing and much of the sew ing Is around pictures of General Washing- jone ne homes of those women ton and Lafayette, and when an ; who liave Bma children to care for. American soldier enters they sufilfng- j))e ejectrlt:lty aid motors, to run ly offer him something for about lour, times what it's worth. Sometimes they get away with it. There Is a canteen in our camp where we get stuff at United States prices, so the Fiencliies don't make much oft of us. The weather here hovers around zero most of the time, so we are w)np too comfortable. Ground is all frozen and covered with snow most of the lime. BERT . SEFFERT, co. G 161st Inf. A. 1$.
