Cor bin. former adjutant general of the United States 'army and one of the best known of American soldiers, who died recently in New York, began his career as a soldier by closing up Murat Halstead's Cincinnati Commercial. It was in August of 1862. Toung Corbin, cot quite twenty, had been assigned as second lieutenant to the Seventy-ninth Ohio volunteers, of which Rutherford B. Hayes was colonel. He was re quired to enlist thirty men. He got twenty-nine of them the first day frota the shops of the Little Miami railroad. The captain, pleased with his success, sent him back for more. He happened in front of the Commercial office just as the printers were going to dinner,, but the hungry men paid no attention to the young recruiting officer. Not to be rebuffed, however, he singled out a likely looking young man and in vited him to luncheon. ' That noon the future general brought to bear that power of personal per suasiveness which In future years con tributed so much to a career of re markable good fortune. The printer was won oyer. They returned to the Commercial office that afternoon and before night took away with them thirty-two men. ; "Young man." said Mr. Halstead when he met Lieutenant Corbin the next day. "do you know you have closed out our paper?" ; The editor merely asked In return, however, that Corbin assist his broth er, Benton Halstead. by crediting to 1dm extra men. as the younger, Hal stead, a recruiting lieutenant, had been nnable to fill his quota on account of being then in the field. Corbin agreed and refused to take the money the brother offered for his trouble. There began a warm, lifelong friendship be tween the soldier and the editor. MARTYR OF PEARY'S TRIP. Cornell Professor Only Man to Lose His Life on Journey. Professor Ross Gil more Marvin of Cornell, the only man to lose his life during the Peary expedition to the north pole,! was the first assistant to Commander Peary and chief scientist of the expedition. He was drowned on April 10 forty-five miles north of Cape Columbia while In command of the supporting party. Professor Marvin was a young man less than thirty years old. He was born in Elmira, N. I. When he was less than ten years old his father, Ed ward Marvin, then city overseer of the poor,- died, leaving a widow and five children, of whom Boss was the young est - - -' Boss Marvin after a course In the Elmira high school worked his way through Cornell 'university,' taking up classics and later, a course in civil en gineering. He displayed a retentive mind and an indomitable courage and spirit ........ V,' ' Boss Marvin's courage and scholar ship attracted the attention of the fac ulty, and when Commander Peary in arranging his expedition to the arctic four years ago asked Cornell to lend him a vigorous man to collect scien tific data there was no hesitancy in selecting Marvin, who was able, ready and willing for the adventure. After his return in 190t5 he remained on the instructing staff of Cornell uni versity, and, realizing the value to the scientific world of the work being done by arctic expeditions, that institution had generously granted him leave of absence to accompany Commander Peary once more and continue the val uable work already under way. MAY MAKE PEARY ADMIRAL. Advance In Naval Rank Urged by Polar Explorer's Friends. Commander Robert E. Peary's dis covery of the north pole has aroused his friends to urge that he be pro moted to the rank of rear admiral. Commander Peary is not an officer of the line of the navy, but a civil en gineer, with the rank of commander. Not only is there no vacancy in the list of rear admirals, but Commander Peary is far down in the list of preced ence and would have to pass through the rank of captain before he could be made an admiral. , It is, of course, possible that con gress will see fit to create an addition al rear admiral and confer the rank and title on Commander Peary, but ft is generally believed that if this addi tional distinction is conferred on him it will be only by executive action. . Get Your "Eskimo Baby." . .- The souvenir manufacturer has lost no time in taking advantage- of the north pole news. He has put on the market a little fur clad Eskimo doll. It . bears , a tag with the inscription, "The lucky Eskimo baby." Uses 1,460 Pipes a Year. Attorney M. L. HoweH of Cassopolis, O., has the distinction of never smok tog a pipe the second' time.'
