TIFFANY & KA'IY GAGNON FREELANCE REPORTERS The University’s Graduate Village, just east of campus, is an ideal residence for students interested in quiet. The majority of the stu dents who live there are law, architecture and business graduate students, according to Can dace Cardiff, area director for Spencer View and East Village. “It’s a studious, quiet environment designed specifically for graduate students,” Cardiff said, “If people aren’t quiet, it’s usually because they’re new or they aren’t aware of the rules.” The typical problems are loud stereos and residents who have a preconceived and incor rect notions about “normal” times and “quiet” times. Graduate Village’s mantra is “peaceful enjoyment at all times.” Janie Vaughn, the custodial coordinator for Graduate Village and Bean Hall, has worked for University housing for more than 22 years. “I’ve seen everything. Nothing surprises me anymore,” Vaughn said. She added that Gradu ate Village is “very quiet” and said that she rarely hears of the type of problems that plague the typical freshman dorms. She believes this is partially because Graduate Village doesn’t have a social area. “Unless you count the laundry room,” she said. “It’s not real social,” said Frederick Reimers, a second-year literary nonfiction student who lived in Graduate Village this past year. “The doors close on themselves, so you couldn’t leave them open even if you wanted to. There’s no interaction with people unless you already know them.” Reimers enjoyed the quiet, but is soon moving into a house off-campus to enjoy an expanded social scene. In the planning stages of the complex, which was finished about five years ago, the Universi ty polled potential residents to see what was important to them and what wasn’t, said Cardiff. Study time won. Party time lost. The village compensates for its lack of social scene with its location. The 72-unit complex, made up of 28 studios and 44 one-bedroom apartments, lies on Moss Street, just north of 15th Avenue, within walking distance of the University and Knight Law Center. “The location is great,” said Bill Sedlak, a first-year law student who just moved to Eu gene from Lincoln, Neb. “You’ve got the gro cery store and all the restaurants on Franklin, plus the law school is just down the street.” Also, Neighbors Bar and Bistro is a quick walk around the corner. It offers specials Thesday through Thursday nights. There are also restaurants and bars on the other side of campus, and downtown Eugene is a short drive away. Graduate Village is relatively new. “It’s nice,” said Reimers, “especially the floors.” Graduate Village’s floors are either large tiles in muted earth tones or hardwood floors. Each unit also comes with an Ethernet hook-up, ac cess to free local calls through the University Telecom Office, and is cable television ready. Laundry facilities are on site and cost 75 cents each for washing and drying.
