Spencer View: Only University students can live in complex Continued from page 6B Spencer View believes that “a sense of community provides a necessary support system for students as well as for their partners and children,” accord ing to its Web site. Current resident Grant Sim mons, a human physiology graduate student, decided to move to Spencer View because his brother had lived there pre viously. He doesn’t regret his decision, he said. However, because Spencer View caters to older students with families, Simmons said there are times when children are running around being loud. “By no means is it a big annoyance though,” said Simmons. Apartment living, however, is wrought with imperfections, and Spencer View is no excep tion. Living side by side and on top of each other has its in evitable downsides, even if the other tenants aren’t holding raging parties. “My roommate spends more time at home than I do and the noise gets to him sometimes,” Simmons said. “People will be playing musical instruments — violins and things like that.” However, the party factor is close to zero. For the 2005-06 year, a two-bed room apartment costs $580 a month, while a three-bedroom apartment costs $694. TWo-bed room units have 700 square feet of floor space and three-bed room units have 800, more than many apartments of com parable price in Eugene. In order to reside at Spencer View, tenants must comply with a list of stipulations: The tenant must be a registered stu dent at the time of check-in and must remain one for three out of the four academic terms per year. Undergraduates must take at least 12 credits each term while graduate students must take at least nine. Westmoreland: Families put at top of waiting list Continued from page 3B There is an industrial court on the outer edge of the com plex that houses Westmoreland Family Medicine & Pedi atrics, featuring pediatrics and dental care. The two-story buildings vary exclusively in their door and trim color (blue, burgundy, teal, etc.) and many of them have a charming patio space outside their front entrance. Random picnic tables are spread throughout the grounds and some tenants seem to have pulled them onto their patio space and called them their own. There are also concrete basketball courts and playgrounds throughout the complex. While some of these apartment buildings sit on the edge of Arthur Street, other buildings are set back and surrounded by other pods of apartments or border the Westmoreland community gardens nearby, providing a quiet, secluded liv ing space in the middle of Eugene. Sheri Donahoe, Associate Director of Residence Life, who specializes in Family Housing, confirmed that “bikes being stolen is a big problem in Eugene,” but that Community Stu dent Officers patrol Westmoreland and Spencer View in the same way that CSOs patrol main campus. There are also Community Assistance staff members, one lives in Westmoreland and one in Spencer View, who collab orate with the CSOs to report suspicious behavior, lights burnt out and maintenance needs. Being three miles from campus can be a deterrent to inter ested renters, but there are several easy modes of transporta tion to and from the University and the downtown area. There are two bus route stops that go back and forth to cam pus every half-hour during the day. For bikers the well-main tained Fern Ridge Path, which winds along Amazon Creek and the Lane County Fairgrounds, emerges on 15th and Washington not too far from campus and downtown conven iences. Unfortunately, one resident advised, coming home from downtown may not be the safest walk late at night: He explained that during the summer the bus hours are more limited so a taxi after a night downtown is a near necessity. For cheap rent, no fast Internet connection and a bit of a walk or drive to campus, Westmoreland is perfect for some people. For those who want fast Ethernet, modern design and a quick walk to campus Westmoreland is not the place to find those things. Although Westmoreland residents are a bit isolated, Ocean Sky Restaurant is a nearby Chinese restaurant, there’s an Al bertson’s, 7-Eleven, Bi-Mart, Prudential bank, Dari Mart, Jamocha’s Espresso Cafe (featuring live music and drive thru service) and perhaps most intriguing is Jamie’s Great Hamburgers, a ‘50s-style diner whose burgers won second place in the Eugene Weekly for Best Burger. For more information about Westmoreland call 346-4277. There is a $30 application fee, applicants must be 21 years old and University students and priority is given to families with children. Rent for 2005-06 ranges from $405 to $450 for a one-bedroom and $445 to $490 for a two-bed room. Westmoreland’s 404 units range in size from 377 to 500 square feet.
