Oregon Daily Emerald Thursday, May 26, 2005 “All are lunatics, but he who can analyze his delusions is called a philosopher. ” Ambrose Bierce | Author illustration by Jonah Schrogin An eclectic range of influences give the band's wild perfomances a soulful, infectious punk edge BY JOSH LINTEREUR PULSE REPORTER The lasttime the Olympia, Wash.,-based band The Gossip played in Eugene, its performance devolved into bedlam as it tore through a messy, distortion-filled set, and lead singer Beth Ditto ripped off her clothes. "It was ridiculous. We got way too drunk," guitarist Brace Paine said. "I don'tthink we played one proper song and the audience just looked confused." But when the band returns to town on May 31 for a show at the WOW Hall, the members intend to tighten things up a bit. "We apologize to Eugene and promise to play the best show everto make it up," Paine said.* And that promise should mean a better rendering of the group's infectious brand of soulful punk music, which con tains a genre-bending appeal that has allowed it to tour with a wide range of bands, including the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, White Stripes, Sonic Youth and the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. Though Paine promises a more reigned-in performance, don't expect things to become too tame. The band's unconscious proclivity for chaotic performances has existed since it gottogether more than fouryears ago and began grinding out notoriously anarchic shows at basement parties in Olympia. "We were the Olympia house party band," Paine said. Remember when the biggest worry you had was whether you were going to get into the same class as your best friend next year? Remember when trying to recall where you last left your bike was the most difficult thing you had to think about? How quickly we grow up. Adecade ago, this time of year was the most fantastic and anticipated, much like it is today, UCHTY.page 10 PULSEMUSIC PULSEMUSIC Yeltsin, "We Will Be a Factory": A musical smoothie of echo-heavy guitars, surf rock drum licks and dance punk bass lines, Eugene's very own Yeltsin has always had the poten tial to become something truly wonderful. With the release of its first full length album, "We Will Be a Factory," the band fulfills some of that promise. Kicking off with the guitar rumble of "Waiting," the album expands on the intelligent, angular pop rock of its self-titled EP. Combining a refined lyrical sense with music that is as much Pixies as it is Gang of Four, Joy Division or any other "name-that-influence" band from the 1980s. The band has a muted pop edge, catchy, yet somber, which is thoroughly dramatic and compelling. Many of the songs, "Standing in the Cold" and "Handful of Pennies" in particular, rush forward with a sense of urgency reminiscent of early U2 tracks. While not an out and out masterpiece, the album reveals just a little more of what Yeltsin is capable of as a band. This is one of the best albums to come out of Eugene in a long time, and one of the smoothest rock recordings so far this year.
