Below are just a few of thefamiliar faces students may see on campus, joined by a few less-visible leaders who steer the University’s important programs and departments. mi .:a&.m University Media Relations Di rector Pauline Austin has worked in the University admin istration for about a decade. Her past experiences include writing as a freelancer for news papers, including The Oregon ian, and television stations throughout Oregon, as well as editing the student newspaper for Southwestern Oregon Com munity College, where she at tended college. Before coming to the University, she worked for Eugene news station KVAL-TV for 12 years. Austin said she en joys being able to pull together a story that gets media attention and still satisfies the University. University President Dave Frohnmayer, whose past ti tles include dean of the law school and state attorney gener al, oversees University opera tions. The Rhodes scholar and member of the American Acad emy of Arts and Sciences is also co-founder of the Fanconi Ane mia Research Fund. Interim Director Tom Hicks leads the Department of Pub lic Safety, the University’s 24 hour department dedicated to campus safety, emergency re sponse, security and parking. In addition, he serves as an ex officio member of the Universi ty's Environmental Issues Committee. - » 4.6 UtIm_ v WmM Lane Community College stu dent John Bartett has been manager of the EMU Subway for one and a half years and a Subway employee for three years. The Spokane native came to the area in 2001 to study culinary arts, but recently switched to art. Barlett, who ad mits his outgoing nature some times leads him to do crazy things at work, said his favorite part of working at the EMU Sub way is working with students. Classics major Don Goldman offers semi-regular political orato ries in the EMU Amphitheater, in cluding a so-titled and inflamma tory "Fuck speech." Goldman, a Chicago native, is a self-de scribed former hippie and left wing activist who wants his speeches to inspire action. His biggest concerns include envi ronmental conservation, fairness to minorities in court and the plight of the poor. Goldman writes for The Student Insurgent and is an artist. He said he plans to graduate sometime during the 2004-05 academic year. Anne Leavitt serves as the University's vice president for student affairs and as the dean of students. Leavitt over sees the Division of Enrollment Services, the Career Center, the EMU, the health center and University housing, and holds a courtesy appointment in the education school. Vice President for Academic Af fairs Lorraine Davis is re sponsible for finalizing hiring and tenure decisions at the Uni versity. Davis, who has worked at the University for the past 35 years, had been a Graduate Teaching Fellow and worked in several professorial positions be fore she jumped into central ad ministration, where she has been for the past 14 years. Davis comes from a large family with one brother and six sisters and is a native of the small Wis consin town of Chetek. Davis holds multiple degrees in math, health and physical education. WH_ Senior journalism major and Phoenix, Ore., native Tyler Graf is editor-in-chief of the Oregon Commentator, the independent journal of opinion offering students "an alternative to the left-wing orthodoxy pro moted by other student publica tions, professors and student groups." Graf, a senior studying journalism, has worked as a news reporter and managing editor at the Oregon Commen tator and would like to either work for a magazine in the Port land area or eventually start his own magazine. Chemistry Professor Richard Linton is the University’s vice president of research and grad uate studies. He administers the more than 60 graduate de gree programs and oversees the University’s many research pro grams, which collectively re ceived $77.8 million in the 2002-03 fisoal year. i
