Gilliam's time was his second-fastest collegiate effort and came just hours af ter competing as a defensive back in Oregon's spring football game "Before the race I was a little con cerned," Gilliam said. "But seeing the crowd — a great turnout — here in Tracktown, USA, and being a great, beautiful day, that gave me all the en ergy I needed." In the field, freshman Brandon Tow er captured his first event win at Hay ward Field with a mark of 166 feet, 6 inches in the discus. The mark was a 10-foot personal best for the Beaverton native, who also competed in the ham mer throw (eighth, 151 -05). Senior Adam Jenkins won the javelin with a mark of 205-3. Despite entering the meet fatigued, Jenkins finished six inches better than former Duck and NCAA champion John Stiegeler (second, 204-9). Oregon had four competitors in the pole vault, with freshman Tom my Skipper setting a new outdoor season best (second, 17-9 1/4). Se nior Trevor Woods (third, 17-1 1/2) and redshirt freshman David Moore (fourth, 16-5 1/2) set new season bests, while sophomore Jon Derby placed fifth (15-11 3/4). Redshirt senior Ryan Andrus wrapped up the meet with an eighth place finish (4:13.25) in the Bill Mc Chesney Jr. Memorial Twilight Mile. The meet concluded the regular season for the Ducks, who will now focus entirely on the Pac-lOs. Decath letes will compete this weekend in Tucson, Ariz., while the rest of the events will be held the following weekend. Red shirt junior Taylor Bryant took third place in the 1,500 with a time of4:40:48. The women's success did not end on the track; it also carried over onto the field. Bree Fuqua, a junior transfer from Wis consin, placed first in the shot put with another Pac-10 qualifying mark of 52 feet, 5 1/4 inches. The throw improved her per sonal best by 1-1 3/4. Fuqua also moved up to second on Oregon's all-time list in the shot put right behind Quenna Beasley's mark of 53-1 1/2, achieved al most 21 years ago. Fuqua said she felt prepared coming in af ter working with throwing coach Lance Deal. "I had a good practice the whole week," Fuqua said. "I was hoping for a litde farther but it's probably better to hold off and wait a few weeks for it." On the pole vault, fresh man Emily Enders and senior Kirsten Lar win each took second place when they cleared 12-10 1/4. They finished behind former Duck and NCAA champion Becky Holliday, who vaulted over 14-1 1/4. Enders, a Snohomish, Wash, native, also achieved a new personal best when she cleared the height on her third attempt. She said she was so excited after clearing the bar that she screamed with joy. "I'm a little embarrassed by that," Enders said. "But it was great with the crowd be hind you, it just makes everything that much better. Once I got on the runway I felt focused." In the hammer throw, sophomore Megan Kriz vaulted up to second all-time in Ore gon history, smashing her personal best by 11 inches with a throw of 185 feet. Senior Jill Hoxmeier moved into 10th on the all-time list with her mark of 163 feet. Hoxmeier, whose last meet at Hayward Field was Saturday, said she will always re member the camaraderie of being around the women day in and day out. "I'm going to miss my teammates more than anything," Hoxmeier said. "They make coming to practice just so much easier. They're just my best friends."
