'Some Devil' music spooky, emotional By Natasha Chilingerian Pulse Reporter After ten years of making music with his self-titled band, Dave Matthews has decided to branch off a __ little and Matthews is the only boss of his mu sic. With that, he creates an aura that is both dismal and sweet. Alternating between glum melodies and love ballads with a sprinkling of cheerful tunes, "Some Devil" is appro CD create some sounds of his own. In REVIEW "Some Dev il," his first solo album, priate for background music during times of deep thought and reflection. It begins with "Dodo," a transcendent song about the past and the last dodo bird. Next is "So Damn Lucky," which describes the thoughts of a man whose car is veering off the road. The album turns from gloomy to morbid in "Gravedigger," where Matthews asks his future gravedigger, "When you dig my grave / would you make it shallow / so I can feel the rain." Two versions of this song — hard rock and acoustic — appear on the album. The hard rock version is catchy, but the lyrics are too disheartening to make it dancing music, and the strings and Turn to SOME DEVIL, page 12 PULSE BRIEF University students interested in having creative work published should send selected pieces to the Emerald. I am a pirate. Which, for me, is actually kind of cool. Maybe I should download a few hundred more albums off Kazaa. Maybe I should get sued by the R1AA. Then when 1 go to court, I could dress up like a pirate. I could get a patch for one of my eyes, a parrot for my shoulder, cut off my right hand and install a hook. I could address the judge and jury with, "Arrr, matey. Shiver me timbers!" or "Well, blow me down, this jury be high says I!" Of course, that might be a little out of hand for the occasion, and the court might hold me in contempt. Or maybe even skip the whole "suing" thing and throw me right into federal prison just to make another example. But the media would not ignore such an event. With the attention this would get, I could hold a benefit fes tival with bands like The Wailers, Beastie Boys, The Roots and Rage Against The Machine (they would get back together just for the occasion). They could get the crowd chanting, "Free the rock 'n' roll pirates of the world!" or "Stop the RIAA!" The whole world would come to gether like the original Woodstock. People across the globe would revolt against the big five record labels (Warner Bros., Sony, EMI Music, Uni versal Music Group and BMG) and the RIAA, causing them all to go bankrupt. Music would finally be set free for people to enjoy and cherish. Honestly, I don't want it to go that far. 1 just want good music for a good price. I want good outlets for free mu sic. And with Halloween upon us, I want a pirate costume. Contact the Pulse columnist at carlsundberg@dailyemerald.com.
