This is ex pected, though.” Getting players into shape is one of many things Dunn hopes to accomplish before the first-year WNBA team’s opener May 31 at Sacramento. “We have to practice every day with the idea of signing the 11 players that are going to make the final roster,” she said. “So day in and day out we’re not only prac ticing, but we have to evaluate some players because we have to make some cuts. “While we’re doing that, we have to get our offensive and de fensive systems in and learn to play together.” Sixteen players reported for camp. When Seattle’s top picks in last week’s draft, Kamila Vodichkova and Nina BjedOv, ar rive next week, they will bring the total to 18. Vodichkova and Bjedov are try ing to get their visas from the Czech Republic and Yugoslavia, respectively. Dunn is mixing a group of young, inexperienced players with 10 players who have either played in the WNBA or the for mer ABL. “We got some players with ex perience and we got athletic play ers,” said Dunn, also the team’s general manager. “We got the kind of players I want to build this franchise around.” Point guard Sonja Henning, ex pected to run the show and pro vide leadership, is a familiar face to Dunn. She played under Dunn in 1998-99 with the Portland Power of the ABL. Henning also brings WNBA championship experience. She started all 32 games last season for the Houston Comets, the defend ing league champions. “Houston was a great experi ence,” Henning said. “I learned a lot from playing on a team that was winning. Hopefully I can bring some of that experience to this team.” Chari sse Sampson and Charmin Smith also played for Dunn — Sampson on the USA Basketball Jones Cup Teams in 1994 and 1995 and Smith in 1997-98 with the Power. “It’s good to have players in camp who played for me before,” Dunn said. “They can help out some of the younger players.” Angela Aycock, who played for the defunct ABL Seattle Reign from 1996-98, and former Univer sity of Washington standout Jamie Redd are trying to make the Storm roster. Aycock averaged 7.1 points and 2.9 rebounds in three seasons with the Reign. Redd left Wash ington as the school’s all-time leading scorer with 2,207 points. “It’s a good opportunity,” Redd said. “There’s nothing guaranteed though. I’m in the same position as everybody else.” Redd left practice at the mid way mark Wednesday with a slight ankle sprain. She was ex pected to practice Thursday. The Storm players don’t plan on offering any expansion team excuses this season. “We’re not looking to be a first year team,” Smith said. “Initially it’s going to be a stepping stone, but we want to make teams in the league respect us.” Seattle plays four preseason games, including a May 13 Taco ma Dorrfe contest against Utah and a May 19 game against Los Angeles at Bellevue Community College, before the season-opener May 31 at Sacramento. Seattle ends losing streak with win By Jim Cour The Associated Press SEATTLE — Considered all but dead after two straight woeful performances on the road, the Seattle SuperSonics are headed back to Utah for a deciding game 5 in their first-round playoff series with the Jazz. Gary Payton had his first career playoff triple-double with 35 points, 10 rebounds and 11 as sists, while Rashard Lewis had 20 f—-—— points and Vin Baker added 18 as the Sonics made it two straight wins at home with a 104-93 victory Wednes day night. The Sonics held Utah to seven points on 3-for-21 shooting in the second quarter, but the Jazz came back to get within two points with 7:16 left. Payton helped the Sonics pull away again with his 15 points in the final period. Byron Russell led the Jazz with 26 points, while Karl Malone had 23 points and 14 rebounds. Game 5 will be Friday night and the winner moves on to face Portland in a best-of-seven sec ond-round series that begins Sun day in Portland. The Trail Blazers wrapped up their first playoff se ries against Minnesota in four games Tuesday night.
